There is a lot of bull but I don't agree fully what you say about cheap links still rocking it in high competitive commercial terms. Big brands are dominating which have very natural "white hat" links that no cheapest of cheap links can contend with.
Sure some niches are dominated full of spammy sites with spun content and terrible links but they don't rank long term. Just look at paydayloans as an example. The cost of ranking is HIGH, the return can be HIGH but short lived.
Now paydayloans is not AN example it is more or less THE example
The example that Matt Cutts himself said back in late may that Google would fix.
Try looking at the rest. See how SAPE has been ranking sites with no original content and the links from entirely irrelavent sites for 15+ months now.
I'm not talking about mega niches. Short tail phrases like "Holiday" or "Vacation" or "Cheap Loans" or whatever. They don't work there, and when SAPE style links DID get a couple of sites into "payday loans" Cutt's team of over educated idiots had to MANUALLY FIX IT because the algorithm would have quite happily carried on ranking shit content with hi authority but irrelavent links.
It shouldn't be that way - It flies in the face of everything I thought was true even 6 months ago, but if the market is under say (finger in the air) 25,000 unique searches a month, then links win just about every battle their is - and they have done long term (since Google)
Where G will fight back is inflitrating the link farms like they did with BMR and LO and LB 2 years ago. Then they will likely slap both the doner and the receiver sites silly for dealing in paid links.
But the algorithm running natually - even after Penguin 2.0? I have less faith in Google's ability to value content now than I did 5 years ago - which is a 100% reversal of my position just 6 months ago before paid link networks just wiped the floor in moderate commercial niches with no content around the link, no context between the link and the site it's pointing at and crap content on the receiving site... and that method wins - every fucking time in moderate niches. It shouldn't - it winds me up that content plays so little part even on the target site.
These new networks have hit me really hard. I have 6 of my 8 money sites down a few places since June. The oldest 2 date back 16+ years and are doing ok, but the rest in 3 different niches have all been hit by link network comeptition that appeared within the last 3-4 months.
The newest (my seo site) is just 18 months old and has 300,000 words and 112 videos all fucking unique on it and gets outranked by someone scraping my front page a year after It's indexed, whacking this scraped content on a new site - and just pointing SAPE at it then outranking me - WITH MY OWN FUCKING CONTENT and 100% PAID LINKS inside 12 days.
Hell one prick has even gone so far as used my own image, name and me supposedly giving his site a "testimonial" - all 100% plagirised - all outranking my original work that was indexed well over a year ago.
If that's supposed to make sense - If "Panda" can't spot the plagirism and Penguin 2.0 can't spot the 100% paid link profiles then what fucking hope is there?
My guess is that Penguin has overbalanced something somewhere. It's worse now than it was in the last quarter of 2012.
Not that I care that much. I'm off to USA this autumn in the hope that the Athletics make the playoff's and just sitting and waiting for these networks to get uncovered. Which will happen. It always does.
