This is actually a good question, because as much as there are positive vibes that say, adapt (which I say all the time), most of us do get nervous when we hear change is happening or change is coming! It can affect our minds and our pockets, so we should care.

The truth is, algorithm changes have been happening for years and they will continue to happen for years to come. semoz has a nice Algorithm Change History resource page, that helps outline these changes. Take a look and see... What you will see is, changes have been happening for years and they will continue to happen for years to come. :)

Hope this helps to bring some perspective.

I have no idea, I know that I just spent the last year as director of SEO / Strategy at one of the largest agencies in the country doing exactly just this.

I work hard and my only one rule is to make every step a step forward or up.

Learn to network well so people think of you imediatly in any situation you can rectify, I started on small home town business and now do global brands, pretty much no black hat going on (it's my hobby) with large companies these days but it's great work.

And yes, once you are consultant level in digital you can move around pretty easy to all sorts of diferent things, I supose once you can prove insight / results and the ability to manage delivery and people you can transfer those skills all over.

It is not easy nor is it stable, somtimes I am near shitting myself, but I love what I do.

Good luck, and to clarify of course its not over, the more complicated it gets the better in my opinion :)

Seo is harder these days but not dead. You have to adapt to these changes to survive these updates. You have to change the link building strategies if you want to rank sites in google. But it will take sometime.

Lol in 2006 and 2007 there were only 2 updates, and now in 2012 ? 2 updates per month :D
 
As long as there is search engines, there will always be SEO. Stick to the fundamentals and you will be good.
 
The Algorithm was before the optimization.
So it shall be once again.

Yeah, definitely more to process... But there are a ton more resources than before to manage changes that happen. There are some cases floating around where people recovered in weeks upon the penguin update. While this might not be the norm, it certainly beats the alternatives. :)
 
I think we see this question every year or two. I've been doing SEO for about 15 years (yes even before Google, when all you had to so was stuff keywords). Everyone back then was optimizing for AltaVista - then Google comes along and changes everything. Of course, Google keeps changing everything with constant updates. It's part of being a SEO! They make a change, you try something new until you find what works.

As for 2-3 years from now - who knows. My best guess is that the SERPs will be much more personalized. So, you'll really need to incorporate social into the overall SEO plan (you should probably be doing that now). Mobile search will most likely increase as well.

If anything, SEO is at its best stage right now. Not in the aspect of difficulty, but you can't argue the fact that the field HAS gotten less saturated. A lot of the lower quality providers have given up due to not being able to adapt. Also, it's harder for new guys that aren't willing to do what it takes to get their foot in the door, making the knowledgeable SEO Providers/consultants more demanded.

Be that as it may, it's still possible to break into this field, but it takes a lot more dedication and willingness to learn and work hard. In my opinion, that's how it should be in every area of business.

This thread is here every month. SEO is a changing game, deal with it. And it's only 1 aspect of IM.
 
SEO will never die, Internet Marketing will never die. You just have to adapt, you should not just sit down and complain "SEO is dying, SEO is dead" , take action, test, adapt to the latest updates, you'll do fine. Penguin did hit a lot of sites, but trust me it's not hard at all to adapt, quite easy, small changes and voila you're back in the game.

Don't give up easy.
 
SEO will die only when Google dies. So don't worry, but improve your knowledge about your career. Don't know, but till now I haven't suffered anything on any of my sites, regardless of updates. My rankings have gone down, but not too much and after some tweaks, I have seen my sites back.

FYI: If G wants to destroy everything, then it will just be a paid directory.
 
SEO is just marketing. And marketing has been here since the beginning of modern civilization, when businesses would pay "street barkers" to shout out advertisements.. the first form of spam.
 
SEO will never be finished, because of the 'O' part: optimization.

Look around this forum, see all the wonderful services, software and strategies that is being implemented.
Next big thing is social? IMers will find the optimal way to do this with limited resources.
Semantic Web? Pfft, frameworks are coming out literally every week and we all now the On-Site SEO practices have been a staple for years so this is virtually no transition.
Microdata? Fine, whatever improves conversions and click-through rate.

This is an absolute meritocracy: anyone who succeeds absolutely deserves to do so. No matter what the medium changes to.
 
If you can't adapt then seo isn't for you. There was always updates and there will always be. And all free traffic generation methods change with time and needs adaptation.
