    Hey Guys,

I've noticed my sites jumping around all over the place lately... probably because of my spammy SEO style being a newb!.

So what do you guys think works now to build backlinks that help increase your rankings..

    1. Article Directories
    2. Bookmarking
    3. Social Bookingmarking
    4. Web 2.0
    5. Social Media
    6. Wiki Links
    7. Blog Comments
    8. Forum Profiles
    9. Forum Messages
    10. Video Submission
    11. Guest Posting on Blogs
    12. Link Wheels

I'm sure I've missed loads of stuff too... BUT

    What do you use now?
What won't you go near for fear of losing rankings?

What tools SEO tools do you use now?
What tools have you kicked to the curb recently?

Let's try and build a list together

Nothing have changed. Just vary your anchor text and avoid onpage over optimization.

These kinds of posts annoy me a tad... nothing against you OP so please do not take that personal.

    What works?

    What will always work?

What works is a solid onsite SEO site.

What works is a backlinking infrastructure that is varied and random.

What does not work is building sites using the same tags on every page.

What does not work is using tools that leave a footprint for your backlinks.

What does not work is not varying your anchor text.

What does not work is using the same exact kinds of backlinks for your sites.

This industry is not rocket science but it does require that you remain fluid in your efforts... rolling with the punches... making adjustments on the fly and being 100% completely random in all your efforts.

I set up a new site today... 150 + pages (yeah that was tons of fun) and each page was different in terms of tags, length of content, location of any images, names of images etc... totally random.

The articles will be posted at random times over the next few weeks using a plugin so all the work I did today will generate activity on a random time frame basis with the few hours I spent to set that up today.

There is no set way to rank, OP, there are thousands of set ways to do that and being random will make you rank all things considered.

Think outside the box... I'm ranking a new site using just bookmarks and some high PR backlinks. I'm constantly adding content, but being random with it. I'm going to just do a little of everything and mix up anchors.

Those things still work.. and will always work. But the way they work is now different.

    Your site needs:
    Quality and unique content.
    Good search engine friendly layout.
    Clean HTML/XHTML.

    Your links need:
    Diversity
    Velocity
    Randomization

    You need:
To stay ahead of the game.

    BassTrackerBoats nailed it, as usual.

The same things are working, you just need to make small adjustments. Diversify. I repeatedly say it in my posts on this forum, but diversity is now the key to SEO.

Not only does it ensure that you aren't "putting all of your eggs in one basket" but it also looks very natural.

Diversify in every area of SEO including on-site seo, anchor text diversification, keyword diversity, backlink type diversity and more.

It's not formulaic. That is the point: to look natural.

    contextual links are king !

    HowTo:

When creating posts on blog network, article sites, web 2.0s this is the way to go:

    1) Text, at least well spun !

I use well spun Text, 60%. Articles are 600-800 words long. Not only spinning automatically, always adding a few unique lines and changing the location for images and videos in the post.

    2) Vary images.
Every post need its own images, I always use 1 image in various dimensions. use the CUT image tool by wordpress or photoshop so every image looks different for google

    3) Drip feeding
    very effective these days

    4) highly spun texts on wikis and high PR blogcomments (even via scrapebox!) work well on tier2+

    5) Onsite linking

If you are targetting the keyword "buy golfballs" for example use a link to the inner page form homepage with an anchor like this: "buy golfballs from nike, callaway and other brands"
    Dont only link "buy golfballs"

    6) Anchor texts for links to moneysite: simply use keyword, no real diversity needed - only a few www.site.com anchors

    7) User inner pages ! Inner pages are king and rank like crazy if linked correctly (see above)

This is whats working very well for me post penguin. Tested on highly competitive keywords

BTB had an excellent answer; there's not a lot that you can add to that.

However, I'd just add a little bit: think a little forward. Not diversifying your links, anchors, etc wasn't very natural and even the percentages being thrown around (unless they are being used as a guide and not a strict number which unfortunately isn't the case with newbies) today aren't very natural.

There are some common patterns you'd need: diversity in links, sources, for example, and a solid site. The 'remain fluid in your efforts' is a very important part of BTB's post; things change and you have to adapt to them.

There are different ways in backlinking.. and there are also effective and not.. however, there are also sites which spam your post specially when they recognize that it is not a good post..

Thanks again everyone for the help, I'm new and working really hard at this, putting it lots and lots of hours studying, watching videos, weeding through good and bad advice, it's not easy to wade through all the information out there, as soon as I think I've worked something out, someone else will say the opposite lol, I guess trial, error, testing are the only ways to learn.

I've had my site since March and managed to get PR2 and a few Page 1 keyword terms for really really low competition long tail keywords. Using social media, article submitting and youtube... I just want to know that I'm not wasting my time on certain areas and focuss on what's best for my site long term. My site is probably never going to make any money, it's more of a test site before I get involved in other niches.

The biggest recommendation I have is to think like a search engine.

Most people miss this entirely, overanalyzing and/or not even analyzing, anything they are doing. It's usually one or the other too, not many people fall into the middle category.

Having said that, think like a search engine. What variables CAN they look at? Why would they look at those variables? What's Google's end goal for its search results? How would YOU create the algorithm if you were in their shoes?

Remember, the web's a HUGE place, and an algorithm needs to scale. The thing is the algorithm can only check so many variables successfully. The number one thing to think about is keeping everything "natural", that'll keep your sites rankings in place for the longest time.
