I'm wondering what the blackhatters think about article publishing volume, backlinking volumes since Penguin, and about what works and what does not. Started working with a team who have been doing fairly high volume. I'm worried that backlink volume is too high (was at nearly 3000 per month) and article writing was at about 100 articles /month. Very few URLs targeted, not a good mix of link anchors being used - about 70% main keyword anchors. Lots of links on low quality sites. In one case 25 on on I.P. out of 250 BLs. So far, it looks like websites that are being worked on are not being affected, though not a lot of movement in rank in the past year considering the volume of efforts. Does article writing and backlinking at these volumes still work? The BLs were on low to moderate PR sites, forums, networks, and the articles were human written not machine spun though fairly low quality. There is a lot of social network commenting (twitter, facebook, others) but it is bad writing and spammy. I've been doing a lot of research in the white hat arena on other forums and you hear a lot of people with little experience saying "you absolutely must play by rules now", and "there's no way to create a "natural backlink pattern" with your own sites, "Your backlinks must not APPEAR natural they must BE natural". I'm looking for input on what works and what doesn't now. Are all the whitehatters just running scared? Or do we all have to clean up?
