What should I know beforehand if I want to offer SEO services to local businesses?

I found a pretty good guide to start, but wish to know what type of work is usually performed as a service for other companies.

Is ranking in Google enough? or is there more to it?

Here are few solid tips for local SEO which help your business rank higher for local search terms.

1. Title and meta description tags still matter
2. Online directories and citations
3. Google My Business: Claim and optimize
4. Use local structured data markup

Here’s everything that you should know if you’re going to sell SEO services, in no particular order of importance.

  • Google has specific guidelines called the Google Webmaster Guidelines that all websites should follow.
  • For local businesses, local listings such as joining the Better Business Bureau and the local Chamber of Commerce can help, especially if they’re involved in those organizations.
  • Having an updated, mobile version or mobile-friendly version of your website is imperative to getting good search engine rankings.
  • SEO is an overall strategy, not a one-time “fix it” or “optimize it” and you’re done. It’s something that should be worked on every day, every week, every month (more often if you’re in a competitive market).
Typically, I categorize SEO projects into three different categories:

  • Brand new websites that haven’t launched yet.
  • Existing websites.
  • Existing websites going through a web redesign.

Great, thanks. Hoping to offer services and having a 60-day money back guarantee if there are no results

First try to rank your own site for some local keywords and then see how it goes and you will learn everything

I think others have covered all the technical things you need to know, but on the sales and marketing end, the best way to get clients is to offer them the end result.

Most local small business owners don't understand the technical jargon behind SEO or web design or digital marketing, what they're interested in...is customers! So that's your selling point, tell them that you're going to bring them orders, customers, leads, etc, and if you can try to offer a free trial. If you can walk up to a local businessman and tell him that you're going to bring him more business, and he only need pay you after he's satisfied, it wouldn't take much convincing.

That's the strategy I've been using!
