SEO is.... Dying

I feel that it is a bit harder but at the same time I don’t feel it’s dying, I still think there are new ways to improve and up your skills but seo is not going anywhere.
That's a typical response right here. You admit that it's a bit harder and that "you need to improve and up your skills" but if it keeps getting harder and everyone has to keep "upping their skills", then eventually you'll get diminishing returns as everyone gets more and more competitive and SEO becomes impossibly difficult which I believe is happening right now.

if you look at the beginning of seo nothing has changed it’s always been hard, it’s always been adapting and overcoming the market changes. I think with the current changes it’s just pushing out the gurus and the fiver packages. Even when you look at the people complaining what are they doing? Basic backlinks? Crappy content? Shitty on page?

how many people build websites to test new market ideas? The good seo guys. Not for money, if anything it cost money to test ideas.

most throw up Amazon sites and get clients then complain it’s not working because they take on projects and clients and guess what works.

if your always learning, looking and testing then nothing has really changed.

in my opinion

How do you know that? There's plenty of folks, myself included, who poured blood, sweat, and tears into our websites with the highest quality articles, highest quality (and very expensive) backlinks, and everything else. Yet, we struggle. So it's extremely offensive when folks like you come in here and assume we're not profitable in IM because our websites are crap and we're not working hard enough. Once again you're gaslighting.

with all those high end backlinks and top notch content have you looked at your competitors because they are using seo properly. Or they wouldn’t be there in my opinion. I’m not gaslighting I’m playing chess not checkers

There is no point in replying him/her. You are wasting your time.

I agree 100%. SEO is dying for the reasons you mentioned and to make things worse the competition has never been more fierce! If you aren't paying for links and posting lots of articles every month you're going to get tossed on to the 2nd and 3rd pages of google real quick. It's amazing how much gaslighting goes on in this forum whenever someone mentions these issues. You get the typical "You just gotta stay ahead of the game bro", "Quit you're whining and get to work", "You gotta change your mentality bro". For example, see this thread here https://www.blackhatworld.com/seo/making-a-living-online-is-not-possible.1348768/

Notice how this guy brings up legitimate concerns about the profitability of IM considering the state of things these days and most comments are just gaslighting him. I'm getting sick of this, and notice how he gets 5000 visitors per day! The guy's clearly doing something right but the cut throat and hyper competitive nature of SEO + the issues mentioned here has made being profitable with IM incredibly difficult. It's just a race to the bottom these days.

Of course, I'm expecting to get some hate for this comment but that will just prove my point. The successful SEO's here that are making money are quick to gaslight you and they are the ones with the loudest voice who are heard the most so they give the illusion that it's easy and anyone can do it. Nevermind the countless people working hard and struggling just to break even.

Best replies ever.
I've built a mantra when I read these kind of replies.
Are kids, with 0 real experience on field.
Do you consider kids' words? Are kids' words based on experience?
No.
When you read "Ch4ng3 y0ur m3nt4l1ty b0oO0!!1!1", move on... Kids' words.
In my country have teached me that if you have no experience or you do not know what you are talking about: shut up, do not talk, do not open your f****ng mouth because you are ridiculous.

For adult biz SEO still counts. But 50% are done just duplicating content... Re-writing a couple of paragraphs.

SEO is pretty much dying. Not because of algorithm updates or whatever, but the INTERFACE. The UI of the search results now.
Google any products

This is NOT true for most search queries and, even if it is, Google is NOT the only search engine.

Sure, it´s the beast taken the vast majority of the market but I am guessing they will only be able to keep up with this until they start experiencing a drop in their revenue because more and more people started using other more user-friendly not-ads and less intrusive search engines...Oh, wait!

If I was Google, I too would try to rank first the pages that either directly make me money or pages that I own. I noticed they now serve Youtube videos with timestamps to keyword matches based on video transcripts. Might not be new, but I only recently noticed it in my region.

Building a recognizable brand that yields a lot of direct traffic is the safest bet for the future. Second bet is to invest into pages, where you have big enough profit margins that you can afford to buy ad traffic and still pocket the difference. I was "out of the game" for a few years and when I came back, I noticed that main mentality of content-drivel producers shifted from doing pages "made for AdSense" to "made for selling guest posts and links", only constant remaining: low quality content.

There are way too many web pages nowadays and most content is garbage. I cringe every time I am buying guest posts on pages that are relevant to my niche, have good stats, traffic, but I would never visit or keep visiting those pages to read them, because they are just too low quality and only made to capture traffic with SEO manipulation and content inflation. When browsing around the web, I often ask myself on some particular page: who tf reads this? To me, most web pages in top 10 SERP are just obstacles preventing me from finding the information I am actually looking for. This doesn't happen always and there are some authority sites that rank well and rarely fail me, but as soon as I go slightly off-road into the unknown, I end up refining search terms endlessly and even venturing onto page 2 or 3. Google still sucks at discovering quality content or products.

Read before you go: "Haha, everyone has been saying SEO is dead for years".

Back then when people said "SEO is dead" and everyone starts arguing about it... During those times, it was purely about the debate on Google's algorithms - backlinks, EAT, bla bla.

But this time, and I have to say since the past few weeks of updates, SEO is pretty much dying. Not because of algorithm updates or whatever, but the INTERFACE. The UI of the search results now.

Don't believe me? Google any products, find reviews of it, how-to, questions, and so on. You will notice something...

First, a huge and wide knowledge panel OR shopping listings at the top.
Followed by paid ads - up to 4.
Then a stupid suggestion of "People also ask" panel.
Then "People also search for" OR "refine your search" panel.
Then finally organic search results - but only 1-2 websites.
THEN YOUTUBE videos.
Finally, the remaining organicsearch results.

With all the panels at the top, it has already taken nearly 50% of the whole search resuls page.
And if a non-IMer searches for something (in this case, Chanel no 5) they would browse through the shopping listings at the top for the lowest price.
Then later bombarded with paid ads listings. Then high chance of leaving the current search results because of "People also ask" suggestions, followed by all the fancy youtube video thumbsnails and what not.

This means if you aren't ranking for that first 2-3 organic search resuls (which may already have low conversion rate by then) you're fucked. Because with all the panels and distraction at the top, no one is gonna go below to find out more. Well, some maybe, but your CTR would have been so low.

Again, this is just Google MOBILE search I am observing and have described above.

What about desktop results?

Depending on what you search.... Top, paid ads (adwords)... Some with even tree-level structure of the advertiser's sites. Followed by perhaps 1-2 organic search results. Immediately followed by "People also ask".
And don't forget that annoying knowledge panel on the right.

See? So much distraction. Even if you rank first organically, your CTR have been severely affected as compared to the OLD google search results interface/UI.

Again, I don't know. In my years of SEO, I'm officially filled with doubts and fear about what will happen next.
Like a fellow member once posted in one of my threads and said something like this, "Google only wants your money. They want you to opt for adwords. Every algorithm updates is just their way to sway you into adwords. Once you see that Google is all about money, you would see the SEO game differently." I mean, why would big G let you profit off their back when they're getting nothing?

You're kind of pessimistic.
There are lots of things you can do with the content of your site to drive traffic from so many places that it may not even be relevant to rank on first page.

Yes its dying, OP stop doing it, also those who agree OP. Why are you wasting your time? SEO it's time wasting, dead, doesn't work, exist anymore.

SEO is just changing not dying. Of course, the CTR are going down. Google keeps updating its algorithm and that's expected. We cannot worry about anything that can't come under our control. Instead we need to adapt to the changes. Grow your traffic and business to look for ideal customers. Be it SEO or paid ads. That's what Google tries to do by changing its algorithms.

I was waiting for this kind of thread to share this one:

There used to be a time when you could make a 5 page site, scrapebox/gsa shitty comment blast - Rank and Bank.

As google got better at detecting spam, we moved on to PBNs and Web 2.0's with heavy tier 2 spam.

Today people build their PBNs like they built their money sites back in the day. You see more sophisticated spam. The algorithm focuses on search intent, topical relevancy, CTR, and lots of other factors.

The point is, it has always been this way. It's not just SEO, as time goes by we have better tech, better resources and as humans evolve, so do their systems. Look at how much better all of the Social networks are at detecting spam than what they used to be. How retargeting has taken over and you now get really targeted ads. What makes you think Google is not going to evolve? at the end of the day, it is a FOR PROFIT company. Google will do whatever they need to do, to make more money.

There is no point in bitching. You just have to roll up your sleeves and keep on doing what you're doing. Nothing will ever be constant. This is just how life works. Just because you have it good today, doesn't mean it will remain the same way for the rest of your life. Either get with the program or sell your website.

It is, and has always been, the survival of the fittest.

I hear that SEO is dying since 2006, but it is still there. In reality more traffic on websites, more revenue on affiliate marketing, the bigger price for website selling on empireflippers, etc.

The more people who think SEO is dead the better.

And typical, useless, gaslighting comments. "There is no point in bitching" so predictable like a broken clock.
