Even 10 years ago when I started, it was the same. I’ve ranked a bunch of clients just by building links, no blog posts, no technical fixes, no big on-page changes. I didn’t have time to do all the “full service” stuff, so I just focused on getting solid backlinks. And guess what? They ranked. Even when the content was average at best.

The tricky part is explaining that to clients. They expect to see something change on their site, like a new page or a design tweak, so it’s hard to tell them, “I took part of your budget and bought backlinks.” Even though that’s exactly what got the results. Lucky not too many of them as they are happy to see traffic and ranking increase.

It’s kind of wild, but I’ve seen sites with mediocre content beat better ones just because they had more authority. Backlinks still carry a lot of weight with Google. So yeah, content and technical stuff are alright, but if you want to move the needle fast, especially in competitive spaces - backlinks do the heavy lifting.

It is still all about links but you need higher budget now compared to 10 years before.

True they still carry weight.
But more and more I find they struggle to compensate other SEO areas if they are lacking.

Basically its about authority and backlinks are the main driving factor for authority.

So at the end of the day its about links with a competitive good content and on page.

if you and your competitors has the same backlinks and you lack on page/ tech SEO then chances are that they outrank you.

I’ve seen it too, good links can beat great content if done right.
Clients may not notice the behind-the-scenes work, but rankings don’t lie.

In fact 10 years ago, you could rank a page only with Content, and there were a ton of sites with good million MAU only with content. Nowadays, I would say that links are even more important than 10 years ago, where content was a thing before AI settled.

I do miss the days of only needing content.

Now more than ever, a few good links is so much better than lots of shitty ones.
I still use meh links when I'm blasting parasites, but a few high quality links can be more than enough to boost a page over subpar content

Links are still important in 2025, but content quality and user experience are equally crucial for SEO success.

Hey ,
Backlinks still matter a lot sometimes more than content or technical fixes. strong, relevant links can push mediocre sites ahead in rankings, even if the content isn’t amazing. explaining it to clients can be tricky, but results usually speak for themselves.

Totally agree backlinks still outweigh most on-page tweaks when it comes to moving rankings quickly

Strong SEO in 2025 isn’t just about getting links. Search engines also look at how helpful your content is and how easy your site is to use. Both quality and experience matter for lasting results.

Links are still the main driver, but pairing them with solid content and good user experience makes the results last much longer.

Totally agree. I’ve seen mediocre content outrank great stuff just because of strong backlinks. Authority still rules.
