One word for the future of SEO.. "Semantic" it's here, it's coming and it's already impacting SEO hugely, this will only grow and grow.

SEO 10 - 20 years in the future? Well, it would be unsure? Maybe SEO would be dead or dying. Maybe SEO would be alive and kicking. Maybe SEO would be taught in schools. Who knows, maybe one of us here would become University Professors because of our knowledge in SEO.

Till the time Google and other search engines base most of their algorithm on backlinks, SEO would be there. I have experimented the so called "no backlinks & great content" strategy in the last couple of years. And it does not work shit. In fact, it was "easier" to rank websites with "great content" before the penguin-panda era compared to today from my personal experiments. Google might tell load of shit but the truth is that they are becoming "more and more dependent" on "backlinks" and "lesser and lesser dependent" on "content" as they are "so called" cleaning up and rectifying their search algos. The only difference is that you need "stronger backlinks" now compared to the past.

Stop with the SEO is DEAD thing guys. We all know SEO just changed not died. The only thing that died is the ease of optimization. Now, it is a challenge, which is why we had to work double and harder just to get our websites to rank.
