If you are new to keyword research and need Understanding the Long Tail of Keyword Demand visit SEOMoz Guide
People are becoming more search savvy and long tail traffic is increasing last few years. Most SEOs know bold search terms like "Books" "Music" etc do not convert well.
Problem 1 How to find which long tail keywords to choose.
This one is easy. Just pick you niche and make a list with 10 of the largest websites. After that just sign with Semrush.com (Paid) and load every website. Than export their keywords in excel files and sort them by monthly searches. Now start looking in keywords with 1600-5000 monthly searches range.
Problem 2 How to choose which long tail keywords are the best?
While I will give you the best automated suggestions I know I prefer to do this manually for any of website I launch. It is extremely time consuming but very rewarding. For example it could take me a week to choose 50-100 keywords with around 1600-5000 monthly searches from the lists.
The first step and most important step is done. This 50-100 keywords are enough to generate huge amounts of traffic. From my expirience 30-150 000 unique visitors monthly.
If you are short of time or skills which long tail keywords to pick just use automatic tools like: Marketing Samurai / seoprofiler.com or search yourself for one.
Important factors in keyword research.
Search Trends - Check if monthly searches are decreasing
Brands in Top 3 - just skip these niches.
Names - Key-phrases which do not include generic keywords (usually names) are easier to rank
Exact-match domains in top 5 - Good sign
And if you already have a website and some traffic you should squeeze the maximum out of it.
You need webmaster tools and Google Analitycs installed.
Export all keywords you got traffic from WM tools and G Analitycs and load them all in keyword tool. It handle max to 2500 keywords at once. Mark Exact match on the left.
Again look in 1600-5000 range. Pick you keywords and load them in decent keyword tracker.
If you have some keywords ranking in top 50-100 you have a chance to rank them quickly in a few weeks. You just need more content and a few strong quality backlinks.
Benefits form starting a project with long tail keywords in certain niche.
You can rank quickly and get some traffic-profit
The traffic will help you for overall rankings
You are creating related content for larger keywords in the niche.
You get natural social signals which also helps for overall rankings
You do not put all eggs in one basket. Your profits are less likely to drop significantly
Soon or later your ranking for bigger keywords in the niche will improve
