Hi... I would like to know how to do SEO and online promotion for a local search engine site...( eg :justdial.com ) targeted only particular city as of now.. Its my friend project..

as a start up .. adwords campaign is planned... and he is stuck up how to carry on with On page SEO and off page SEO and boost its online presence. i ahe had ranked some micro niche sites... but dont exactly know how to plan for this type... :-|

BTW outdoor promotions also going to be done... His main concern is online planning ..

would like to hear some suggestions and ideas

Step 1: Change the site's name, it's just not catchy for a search engine. A search engine really needs to be a 1 word name.

Step 2: The name must be able to be used as a VERB. Microsoft made this huge mistake when Bing used to be called Live... Saying "just bing it" sounds much better and is less confusing than "just live it"

Step 3: Launching a search engine isn't just as easy as coding one up and waiting for people to come... You have to put a solid marketing plan together. And if you don't have at least 10K - 100K prob. not even worth the time. Unless your engine is REALLY amazing beyond belief and people will want to share on their own.

Step 4: Fix your reputation as it already sucks... http://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/us.justdial.com

That is NOT search engine, it is a local directory site that has a search site feature. This has only been done 10,000 times, what makes this site different? What is unique about it? That is what you need to be concentrating on and like the guy above said, unless you have a million for advertising (100k won't cut it for NYC), good luck. CitySearch is broke for a reason and all your friend is trying to do is an out dated version of CitySearch. Not trying to be mean but seriously ... Come up with something completely unique and original. Oh and mobile is where you need to be concentrating.

@ the demon... i stated JUSTDIAL.com as example.... not that site.. i am not revealing the site as now... :-) The site is going to be same like justdial.com but with more unique features and giving quality information ... and as @aakon7 said.. its a local directory with search site.... and The site is based on india and one city as of now.. Not the US market... :-) local outoor ads will be done... adwords for local terms and fb ads plan there... the overall process of SEO , backlinking and increasing online presence only stuck up now... :-|

You want help on how to SEO a site, but won't show what it is?

The questions that need to be answered are, "Why would any business want to list their business in your directory?" and "Why would anyone looking for a local business use your directory to find one."

The ad-sense idea is a loser and doomed to failure. If you intend on trying to monetize a site like this using ad-sense, forget it. Nothing screams "BULLSHIT SCAM SITE STAY THE FUCK AWAY" like ad-sense ads. You'd have to blackhat SEO the site to get any traffic, and your bounce rate will kill-off whatever artificial gains you might make using blackhat methods. People surfing for porn or sex toys might be willing to put up with a certain amount of spammy bullshit, but people searching for a local carpet cleaner or locksmith are not going to waste 2 seconds on a spammy, bullshit "local" directory that offers nothing but shitty ad-sense ads.

I think one reason why Google seems to be looking about for alternative revenue streams is that it has figured out that covering a good site with ad-sense makes it a bad site, and that people would rather browse a shitty site that is devoid of ad-sense than fuck around on a good one with all the hidden pitfalls of semi-hidden spammy, shit-ass ad-sense ads.

Notice any ad-sense on wikipedia articles? craigslist?

This stuff might not be as true for purely organic searches, but local searches are more grounded, people are looking for something real and immediate and they have real money to spend on a real service or product. It's not a hypothetical situation, and I think they are going to be a lot less forgiving if you fuck-up a site that promises something local vs. a spammy site for something organic.

Thanks :-) As the site is my freinds i cant reveal and it hasnt launched yet. next week only going live...

and yeah adsense will not be used ever any other ad medium will be used as of now.... main monetizing is going to be from advertisers enrolled for featured , premium listings... The monetise will part will be discussed after site achieves a good position and receive huge traffic and happy users.... Database is quality one.. users will get quality and relevant results....
