I'm certainly no expert but I do know links are the name of the game (even buying them).
You could also set up feeder sites (on different c class IPs and different whois details if possible - maybe privacy) and linking on your strong keywords back to your main site.
Put 10 - 15 pages on each feeder site and if you can aquire any .edu links or know of anyone who could possibly buy edu domains on your behalf, snap them up and build feeder sites. They're gold for authority.
Maybe try some YouTube marketing as well, depending on your niche, you make (slap together) 'how to' videos on the topic and link back to your site on your target keywords.
