SEO effects for these 2 examples

I wanted to ask if:

https://www.example.com/how-to-lose-weight would rank better on the search engines than https://example.com/blog/how-to-lose-weight

If the majority of high authority backlinks are pointing directly to the https://www.example.com instead of https://www.example.com/blog , does it make sense that the inner pages which are linked directly to the homepages will gain more seo effect or it doesn't matter at all?

example.com/blog/, /blog/2/, blog/3/, etc, they are counted as archives (category) page.

Some SEO plugin recommends archives page (category, author, date, tag, etc) to be noindex. So search engine will index right to your main article than those archives page.

I don't know if example.com/blog/your-title-article/ would indexed as main article or archives, I think it depends on how you set it on website structure.

Honestly, I think a lot of it has to do with how you build the "blog" page. If you're just using the default wordpress category page, then I don't think it's really of much value - and I would noindex it.

However, of late, I've been trying to rank my category / archive pages for relevant low competition LSI's & long tails. My thought being, get them to that page & then entice them to not bounce & read all the related articles.

I basically write a whole 'nother long form article that shows up on the page. I manually insert links to some articles & then let the theme display everything as it normally would.

It doesn't mind much as long as the page is adequately linked from most places in your site (for example, in the nav menu)

Generally speaking, the closer to the root the better. That's why most people try to rank the homepage.

That's why the 1st example would be a better candidate.

/blog/how-to-lose-weight - 2 levels deep

As far as backlinks go, you can manipulate things quite a lot with backlinks so the "test" would be messed up.

Linked ones will get more effect than unlinked ones. In fact, they might not even get indexed.
