Semrush Keyword Difficulty

Hi there,

I'm quite new to SEO so go easy on me. I'm trying to understand Semrush keyword difficulty, take a look at the attached image for example.

"Word games" has KD of 85.96
"Google keyword tool" has KD of 70.19
"PPC "has KD of 72.73
"Google keyword planner" 69.64

Quite clearly then, it would be prudent to target 'Google keyword planner' if that was my niche market.

My chosen niche has lots of keywords hovering around the 60-70 area. The content I have developed is pretty much spot on, and my onsite SEO I would say is pretty good. Backlinks - I have zero.

So my question, just how easy would it actually be to be get ranked Top 3 for the following Semrush KW ratings, if you were starting from scratch - new domain and no supporting PBNs etc:

• 50 to 60
• 60 to 70
• 70 to 80
• 80 to 90
• 90 +

Also, are there any other factors I would need to consider when targeting certain keywords? What is the best path to take?

Don't just go by Semrush. You can use Moz to check keywords too, then run through KWFinder, KW revealler or LTP too.

Have a look too at the top 5 sites and look at their DA and PA, how good is there onpage too.

Then once you're happy move forward.

Don't just rely on 1 tool though.

right, don't rely only with one tool. When you think a keyword could be the good one, test with kwfinder,keyyword, LTP, marketsamurai...

OK, that's fair enough. I'll come back to this later when I've got some more statistics.

Because I've just started my SEO journey, my immediate concern is how efficient / effective will my efforts be? I want to literally know how much money and time it will likely take to rank keywords given the competition out there.

Whilst I understand I need to build up experience by testing things myself, there's nothing wrong with raising the question now

This. Don't just rely on some magical tool. IT's good to help narrow down to a bunch of choices, but it's going to be something you're going to dedicate a lot of time and money to, take the time to do proper keyword research. See the top sites, see if you have any chance. There could be no competition but the top sites are strong authority sites, there's no point on trying to compete.
