Hi guys, so I started selling web development to local businesses and it's already doing pretty good.
My target has so far been on businesses that doesn't have responsive websites (responsive = website that is compatible for phone, tablet and computer).

How would you go about cold calling businesses and selling them a new website, keep in mind they do have a website right now, but it's ugly as fuck and difficult to navigate..
I don't feel like I can say that it needs an update or .. If you know what I mean.

What would you do?

You should emphasize how having a better website can yield them more profit and why they should choose you. Focus on their benefits only.

Focus on their benefits only.

There you have your answer: BENEFITS.

Businesses want more engagement, more exposure, more leads and consequently everything boils down to more $$$.

Tell them how you can help them make more money. You can even hire a copywriter to script out the benefits so your service sells better.

And you won't be needing differently researched separate scripts too as you already mentioned you have a target audience. "Non-responsive sites".

You need to tell them that they are offering amazing products/services on their website however their website is not optimised.

If they optimise their website it will go a long way in getting more sales and you can help them do that.

Then tell them how. For eg boosting their loading speed, optimising for various devices, making the website beautiful etc.

Do not sell the design, but what that design could accomplish. Nobody cares if the site is ugly but brings in tons of leads/revenue. Focus on how a better site with better CTAs would convert better bring more money, more return visitors etc...

Your current website is great because it is simple to use, I am sure it does pretty well because of that. I did notice a couple of other areas where you could improve things though and make the site even better than it currently is.

Here are some key points - then list out the points explaining what each one entails and how it will improve their site and generate more traffic / sales / leads.

Then finish off with another positive point about their site (The praise sandwich).

Id go down the route of google makingnloads of changes so older sites wont rank as high. Have a nice flashy new site.

cut the BS mate, you should say like

''Your website looks terribly bad. You do realize website is the face of your business. Do you realize how many clients you are losing because your website looks so bad?''

You need to shock them, shock therapy works

good luck

Just tell them it looks like a site I designed.

That should work for you about 95% of the time.

I’ve been in this situation. What I did is simply find a competitor who’s good with their online branding and point out what they are missing on. Works every time. Always talk like that your service will put them in top.

Can you elaborate on this?
Why would I design a site that looks like what he currently has, as I am calling him since he needs an update :)

Thank you so much for your contributions guys, it really helps me moving forward!
I am currently building up a list of 2.000 leads with horrible websites, and found an extremely good niche! :DDDD
