Screw Text Spam, Use Bluetooth Proximity Ads...

A stop at the local Radio Shack ought to get you all you need, as well as the technical advice from one of the geeks there.

Haha, those idiots get stumped at every question I've throw at em. But thanks for the info this is looking pretty legendary as a business model. Geoff that one is looking good(30km...badass), i'm gonna check more into them.

I think I found the flaw in the business model. This is from ProxiBlaster site:
"In our tests here in the USA on average 27% of cell phones have the ability to receive what ProxiBlaster is sending . The remaining cell phones either have the bluetooth turned off (undiscoverable) or do not have a file transport service installed in the cell phone operating system . Many phones will work , however some carriers (Verizon, Sprint, Nextel) will cripple bluetooth on their phones and the phone can only receive vcards,"

It seems like US carries make it hard to send messages to users.
So if you take 1,000 people with mobile phones. 80% have BlueTooth, of those 27% can get the file you are sending and 25% will opt to receive. Which is about 55 people per thousand will look at your message.

Dude im in socal you are a fn genius indian casino OMG:yield:

On both of those sites there is a product that allows you to carry it around with you. Think about just walking around a sport event. It's great because no one would ever know you?re the one sending the messages.
Maybe park your car at a main entrance and hit up every car that drives by or right by the main gate and get people as they are walking in.
I live close to Los Angeles.. the Lakers have an average attendance of about 20k people per game.
Let?s say you are able to get your message though to 20% of attendees - That would be 4,000 messages sent. I'm not sure if that's high or low.. I would think just about everyone has a BlueTooth enabled phone these days.
Thanks to the new law in California that you can?t drive while on your cell phone MANY people have converted to BlueTooth headsets which mean they have BlueTooth enabled.

If you where to market something like Bodog Sport Betting site .. they pay you $100 per sign up (that deposits $20.00). If 2% joined that would be 80 converts @ 100.00= $8,000.
I think there is normally about 17 Home games in a season. Correct me if I?m wrong.

Would be a pretty cheap test.
PortaBlue Broadcaster: $800.00
LA Lakers Ticket: $100.00 (so you can watch the game while the thing is marketing to people inside your car)

Southern California also has a lot of Indian Casinos. I couldn?t even imagine the number of people coming in and out of them on the weekend.
Just about all of them have valet. Rent a sick as car for the day and tell the valet to leave it in the front (which they do because it add to the image of the casino).
Think about promting people to download a file called (casinoname)100FreePlay.jpg.

Tell me if I?m way off but it seems like a great idea and a pretty cheap start up.

Hmm, imagine dropping little devices in major places that could receive remote transmations and blast the ad out to their respective proximity...

Think of the FBI bugging NYC and that's what I'm talking about with these things...

Say wall street??? ....... "Dear sir, stock X is about to go up, buy now!"

** WARNING: do not use in stock market, that's a huge criminal offense to mess with. Provided for comical purposes only **

PS: To anyone who buys this device and actually receives it, it's good quality, and would recommend it to a family member please send me a PM with the site info. I'd love to hear success stories.

**Anyone promoting their own site or spamming will be reported. Please serious shares only. Thanks.

HAHA, stock pumping!
What you really need is "proximity text messaging". That would be the shit!

Another flaw in this scheme is that (in UK anyway) practically all bluetooth needs to be "paired" by a matching 4 digit code on both sets before you can send anything. Autodiscover will find the device but will not know the code?:(
Factory default on most sets is 1111 until its reset by the owner.

So, if you go to a ball game, with an attendance of 20 or 30 thousand? Not a bad days work for going to a ball game, eh?

well, 1,100 would get your message (approx.) .. of that say 2% go to your site 22 and 10% sign up .. maybe make a couple hundred an event depending on what you are selling. Still not a bad idea but was no where near what I thought it could be when I first started reading the thread.

What would be insane would be a system that detects mobile numbers in the area and send text messages. I would think that would be more like text spam and prob. illegal but would be much more effective because you'd have a 100% delivery rate.

S'OK, I'll take an easy additional $200 or $300 a day, hands off. Once the thing pays for itself, the rest is gravy.

Yeah, if you figure you can sit it outside a sports event/ concert and just let the thing make you money. not a bad idea. Do like two a week could generate you $2k a month pretty easily.

Yeah, you know... on second thought... this wouldn't work at all. No point in any of you guys trying it, it's deader than a hammer! Go back to your homes now folks, nothing to see here.

I can't believe the price tag on those machines. we've built exactly similar stuff for research purposes in my work with used mobile phones and ~100 lines of python..50$ a pop. This was delivering ads also to pedestrians, but it was strictly opt-in in even more strict way - users had to preverify that they want ads.. Not just press "yes" to incoming Bt push.

All the phones with Bluetooth use same Bt standard and it's the same Bt push protocol that they implement. Range of normal mobile's Bt is 10m only, that was the downside... But heck, this might be worth trying in some crowded events even with that!

@lizmoz - Where you able to send text messsage though BT or the standard vCards/Gif files?
Sorry, I should say SMS test message. I guess you can send files a .txt message but I'm wondering if it's possible to send an SMS message though BT

SMS over Bluetooth is a pain in the ass - that simply won't work anytime soon with more than a bunch of rare handsets. (no, we didn't even try) If you read the specs closely from that device, the user gets something VIA Bluetooth, then sends an SMS to the gateway of that company which forwards it to you - this way you'll get their phone number where you can then send SMS ads via the same gateway. Nothing to do with SMS over Bt.

It's easy to get confused about this - even if the sent file appears as "SMS" in many phones, it's not really an SMS as itself, it's just a file pushed via Bluetooth and the phone was in close proximity of the sender of the message... whereas you can push SMSes to wherever and from wherever you want - just need a good gateway access, which are usually not cheap.

Bluetooth can push any filetypes as itself, and it's up to the phone then what they are able to process. E.g. animated gifs, plain .txt notes, new Nokia models even can display complete html pages with embedded base64 coded images with full javascript menus etc... This is pretty cool actually. But I wouldn't get my hopes too high about fancy scenarios with this technology just yet...but it's coming.

Plain text ads with hyperlinks would in my opinion penetrate most devices out there and thus work the best.

There also seem to be some companies that offer sending the ads out as a service themselves. Dunno how much they cost - they haven't responded to me yet :)

G-Man

You can hardly get a soldering iron at Radio Shack anymore. They got confused when I went in looking for a vox chip so I could take apart my Staples 'easy' button and replae the innards with my own that would say, 'damn, that was hard as fux!'

Sorry to hijack...back to our regularly scheduled programming...
