It'd be really interesting to set this up over a city
Of course I know nothing about bluetooth.. but I am sure that if the phones bluetooth can't talk to you, no transfer, right? You can amplify your signal all you want but you still have to be in range to receive the handshake or whatever it is, right?
And you can only send 6 simultaneous transfers? Hell.
Also 90% of phones have bluetooth powered off, by default, right??

Anybody who owns one of these things tried it? Seems like a great idea but it doesn't sound like the technology is up to speed yet.
Don't ask me how I know this but you can use a potato can to massively extend the range of a bluetooth dongle.
I know this may sound like bullshit but look up plans for a cantenna. They were originally produced for wardriving and wifi which operates at 2.4 ghz (802.11 b & g)
Blue tooth is transmitted at 2402-2480 MHz so the design was modified to suit. I have a friend of a friend who's big into wireless security. Also check out the bluetooth tools available on backtrack4 (a live linux distro) if you are serious about doing something big with this medium.

Most devices have BT disabled by default. One has to go in and enable their BT and usually this is for a wireless headset, so that drops your numbers waaaay down. Then they have to accept the ad. I was in this about a year ago. A lot of work for very little return, unless you hang a sign, TURN ON YOUR BLUETOOTH for an important message
Delete this thread because this is where my 23rd million dollars are coming from. Unfortunately my first 22 millions were never made because the techniques were too old and saturated or I couldn't invest or I couldn't do the right things or I was scammed (read pawned) at DP or something...

No seriously, this is the best I've read because pure online internet marketing never interested me. I am always more impressed by offline involvement so this is THE thing for me. Now all I need is an angel investor (just $20K) and I might make him and me a fortune to last more than a lifetime!

for proximity marketing to work, you will have to advertise for the user to turn on their bluetooth and receive the message. There really is no way to spam someones phone with it.
AND, it doenst work with iPhone, Android or Blackberry, which is why you dont see it in the us much. It's big in Europe though.

You don't need pairing if you just send them a contact.
I used to be interested in bluejacking and doing this. You send a contact but all you got to advertise with is the name of the contact, which will then flash up on their screen.
So a domain name and a call to action and that's it. (e.g. visit cccc.com)
I used to stand above major train station and unbelievable how many people passing through with their BT switched on. Don't forget that tons of dudes use headsets and keep their BT on all the time.
I think CPA might work well with this. Only problem is trust. Do they trust you to check out your domain? Also volume. You need a lot of sends to translate to clicks. At least they are all free though. I wonder how many clicks one hour of hanging with your laptop would generate?
