Hello, I'm currently writing a novel on 'the perfect crime' (if that exists). The story plays in the future, 20-30 years from now. The first idea was that the crooks that would commit the crime, would hack into a bank system and pull out 500 million$. But that scenario is rather classic. And also rather unrealistic. I mean, even if you could hack into the system of a bank, I doubt you could wire out 500 mln$.

So I came up with the following scenario (in short): The crooks setup a number of trading accounts under false identities. They then brake into the system of a large company (like Google) and create havoc. This would make the stock to drop. The crooks short the stock. By putting in 30 million, they could pull out 500 mln (using leverage and multiple accounts).

Now the story plays in the future, so I can permit myself some freedom in what is possible and not. But it has to remain realistic. So to start with, the start capital cannot be wired in from another account , because there would be a trace. The only solution I can think of, is that the crooks would fill up a number of accounts with cash, using fake identities. But is it possible to deposit let's say 2 million dollars into a bank account without questions being asked?

The second question is: After they have made their profit, how to pull it out of the bank accounts? Again, by wiring it to other accounts they could make it difficult to follow the trace, but finally, those that are after them would find the trace anyway. So the only way would be to pull out the money in cash, in stacks of let's say 5 million (remember, the total gain is 500 mln). Is that plausible? (I doubt if there is anyone here that has tried to withdraw 5 mln in cash :) )

Is this plausible? If not, any other ideas? I post this here, because you guys might have some more knowledge about what is feasible and what is complete science fiction. So let your brains and imagination work: How would you setup the perfact crime to make 500 mln dollars ?

Thank you

Banks don't keep that kind of cash on hand, they would have to "order it" and I'm sure there would be some regulatory body asking questions in that scenario. That idea is probably not plausible but your storyline looks like it could be fun to develop.

To continue with my own scenario, the second question can be resumed as: 'how to make the 500 mln in the trading account legal? One other scenarion I thought of was the following : The crooks would setup a real/fake mining company and operate it for a year. Creating fake certificates for diamonds that they find. Then, after a year, they would sell their (non existing) diamonds to 'a company'. And they would have (fake) proof of the transaction where they delivered the (invented) cargo against 500 mln. The ones that track the criminals would investigate the buying company, but of course fall on fake identities. But the crooks, still under false identities, have now earned their 500 mln in a 'legal' way. Feel free to shoot holes in this.

I agree. That's probably sure for banks in Europe/US. But what about offshore banks? Or banks in countries like Nigeria or Liechtenstein. I could of course invent an imaginary country where this is possible, but that would make it really science fiction...

Licechtenstein is part of the EEA so its not really offshore and they have had alot of bank reforms over the past few years to crackdown on illegal activity.

I have partly covered that issue in my story. Most big crimes/robberies in the past, fell apart because someone got caught or started talking. So in my story, the main crook that organizes the crime, eliminates one after the other all people that participated in the crime , to eliminate the risk of getting caught...

You're not really an author. Just some guy with an idea. Author's take pride in their work, and they care about and put special effort into every single detail. You should give up on this delusional idea that you are an "author" and pursue some other line of work more suitable to your character and temperament. I heard Jiffy Lube was hiring. I heard the last guy forgot to torque-down the oil drain plug and their client dumped their entire crankcase of oil on the freeway at 70 mph and it destroyed their engine. You could replace that guy.

You're delightful. I'm confident you are going to go far in the world.

Erm, that's how all failed crimes fall apart.

If you want to make a story interesting you are going to have get a bit more creative - especially if it's set in the future.

The whole point of setting a story in the future is that it gives you the freedom to get creative - and I'm afraid a stock scam or bank robbery just doesn't do that.

Why not think about how technology will change our lives in the future and use that to come up with a crime scenario?

Thank you for the idea. I might pursue that when my books stop selling.

Well, I somehow agree with you. I can use some things/items which are not plausible yet. But I don't want to turn it into a James Bond scenario where he is flying to the moon and noone asks the question how he got there and why he's not floating around. In short, I want it to be a story where people say, after reading , "Hmm, yes, could be plausible in the future.."

Let the plot begin with the chiefs of Micr0s0ft, G00gle, fb, and top bankers assemble on a luxury yatch with their hot secretaries... Let the ship be taken to south pole by your hot women in black... Those guys can gift you 500 million wwithout a blink... But this time, they choose not to. The us govt steps in... Your girls go into special hot action... Even after 2 decades, those guys will still be rulers and not too old...

I didn't mean things that weren't plausible - that's getting into the science fiction/fantasy genre.

I was thinking more along the lines of current technology and where it is going in the near future.

For example, right now, with contactless payments, a security expert has demonstrated it's possible to steal money from people just by getting the right piece of equipment close to their cards - he even showed how it's possible to circumvent the payment limit and steal thousands instead of tens of dollars.

Now that's a scenario for a potentially untraceable crime - walking through a crowd of people stealing hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Why im future 30 years such crimes happening today. you cant predict what will be in future with technology and all so maybe that story woud be old. Who knows what criminals will do in 30 years. And what will feds use too to trace them

I agree about the bank robbery. For several reasons:

1. It's pretty classic and has been described and filmed on numerous occasions
2. It's very unlikely that you can find a place in the world where they store 500 mln in cash with numbers that are not tracked
2b. And even if that existed, and they could rob a place like that, 500 mln in 100 bills is a truckload full weiging 10000 lbs. I could invent some scenario where they would disappear with the truck. But again, a bit too classic.
3.Stealing a truckload of jewelry/gold/diamond or whatever. Like in oceans eleven or 'the bank robbery'. It makes a nice story, but no one seems to ask the question at the end: And now what? I mean, imagine you could empty fort knox. But what to do after that to monetize it? It's similar to movies where they steal the crown jewels or the Mona Lisa. Completely unrealistic because you would never be able to monetize it.

That's why I eliminated all ideas about robbing a bank/museum or whatever.
