Hi there,

I have a very fixed budget for my adwords campaign if 1,5K / month.
It has been eaten up at the end of the month and there has been no display netowork and no retargeting made.
I did knew there have been many money eaters and I can set some amount free to have resources for display and retargeting and made it with three clever automated rules. I did a test run for one month and today I analyzed the stats: Better CTR from 2,1% to 4,2%, bettered conversion rate about 1,5% AND set an free amount to invest in new ways by 58% (!!).

It a favour for me to share this set of automated rules with you here:

Rule #1 Pause bad converting Keywords automatically:

This rule will deactivate your keywords that got only few impressions, only few clicks and conversions below 1%

Rule #2: Change Max CPC to stay on top for lowest possible price

It raises your bid for converting keywords if they are not on the first position.

Rule #3: Cost Optimizing for the second place

This is a cool one and complements to Rule #2. Make sure you have nice ads with a good CTA:
It is nice to be directly on top, but its often pretty expensive. This Rule decreases our bid by 10% when our ad hits the first spot (from Rule #2) . When the ads moves down to Spot #3 Rule #2 increases the bid again by 10% to get back to postition 2. Goal is to hit permanently Spot #2, but keep in my mind to have great converting copy + good call to action.

Have fun & good success!

Is it really that easy to maintain an adwords campaign? will this work an a tighter budget also? You tried this rules for an account wit 1,5k budget, i just about 100 bucks per month would it still work?

Hahaha, I know your username from my inbox :)
Regarding your question: Of course this rules will work with a smaller budget, too anf make your campaign more effective. It is a very down to earth method, but you should only use automated rules, if you understand 100% what they do and why they make sense.

Wow, this is pretty low feedback from you guys for one of my best money savers. Not so motivating to share more of them. :(

Thanks Monchichi for your words !

question about the conversion tracking.

Is this at the account level when you set this up? Are we able to track conversions for certain ads or ad groups? How can we set that up if so?

Thanks

you track always to the deepest level (keyword/ad). setting up is similar like tracking conversions in GA, with a JS snippet you insert into the head tag. for more exact information please refer to the adwords help as this is 4 years ago since i set this up last time. just my 2 cents i remenber so far

This is very helpful as I am just getting into PPC marketing... thanks for the share, bookmarked for use :D

Thanks Subster and yes, very low response for a good post but you've got my vote and thanks for it!

As others mentioned, a good load of tips. As a ppc newbie, I'll sub this thread and hope to learn some more.

Thanks given!

Dr. Hulu, its hard to say from outside your box. Please check if you have setup everything as described and check if you run your campaign with enough keywords to get a significant value.

I just recently started adwords campaign & your post some valuable info that i think will help me decrease my ads running cost.

You are welcome, let me know, if I can help you any further

Wow, these are some great tips. Thanks a bunch for sharing, subster!

First of all thanks a lot for sharing these rules.

Just need to ask one thing off topic, is it still possible to run affiliate sites on adwords ? I keep on getting banned because of bridge page policy.

Thank you.
