Samplers 30 Days of Coding

Always wanted to start coding, bought books and had a flick through and just left them gather dust.

Now that I've got a Mac and you put up this thread, there is no excuse to start learning on codeacademy :D

Thanks for the Inspiration Sampler!

Yeah, he inspired me too to learn coding

Very inspirational video.
It's the truth - everything around us is programmed and coded.
Thanks for both this thread and that video - I'm going to be putting together a schedule to get back to learning code.

As with most things, we don't begin because we are afraid to fail.
We are afraid to put in the time and effort because we want a guarantee to not fail.
The only guarantee is, if you never start, you can never succeed.

Ok, so I happened to be chatting to a GM from Microsoft and
I asked him what he thought about "failing". His answer was
somewhat expected as he talked about how he though of failing
as just a different way to learn; that is if you learn something
in the process then you shouldn't really think of your activities
as a "failure", just that the outcome wasn't what you wanted.

So, in terms of my first journey, here are my stats.

26.5 Hours Total.
33.5 Hours to go.
17 Day Streak.

My goal was 60hours in 30days.

Clearly I didn't achieve my goal but I wouldn't consider what
I did as a failure. I layed the foundation for something good.
Something which I want to finish now.

I can attribute my stopping to around 3 things. These are I guess
excuses and I don't really think what they are need to be mentioned
all I want to say is that over the next 30days I will get 60hours of
coding in.

No days off.
No excuses.

Sampler, you might be interested in taking CS50 from HarvardX (it's computer science for absolute beginners). Just google 'edx cs50' and you'll find it on the first page. If you finish it before Octomber 15, you'll get a free certificate from them. I'm taking it too.

I just want to point out that I don't think oct.15 is right. I googled it and it said that it started on oct 15 2012 and ends april 15 2013 meaning next month I doubt anyone could go through the entire program in one month.

Sampler, I just wanted to let you know that I am using this thread as an inspiration to get off my butt and start learning to code. I wish you the best of luck in your second go at your journey. I look forward to reading your continued progress. Thanks for the inspiration and good luck

Didn't get to post yesterday because I was really short
on time. Still got to code though.

1.0 Hours Today
4.0 Hours Total.
56.0 Hours to go.
3 Day Streak.

And today

6.0 Hours Total.
54.0 Hours to go.
4 Day Streak.

so you stopped coding now ?

No, but I did stop updating this thread. I found that
with my first/second attempt at starting this thread
that when I got into a streak it was great, but when
I broke it I lost quite a bit of motiviation. I ended up
changing my method of going for streaks on codec-
ademy and rather found a CSE course from an American
college and followed this. I definitely achieved over
60hours of coding and will be releasing a website soon
to show what I've done.

I need to learn from this experience and try to understand
what the best way for me to set and achieve my goals are.
