How closely should your vsl be to your sales page? I've seen some that are copies of the LP sales copy and some that are completely different.

Could be the same script with the added visuals in the vid. If your landing page copy is converting then that's a valid reason to mirror it in your vid. What some do and what I've done is break the sales letter into parts to create a set of say three videos. You can use video one on a squeeze page with a reverse optin - you let them watch part one first, then require an email addy to access part two. Then you deliver part two, then deliver part three/vid three with your call to action.

This is mind-blowingly smart. It's a subtle way to incorporate the customer saying "yes", if even subliminally.

Personally I've found it unnecessary to change your script compared to the sales page and sales video.

Just add some eye-catching visuals and you'll do fine.

+1 on not changing much. We've done big volume this way and it has never come around and bit us in the a$$

The video should offer something above and beyond the sales page text

If anything the video should be a stripped down "POTENT" version of the sales page text
