Everyone is entitled to opinions of course, but people need to remember that behind the viral video or news story- is a real person's life. Don't forget this.

True.
But why is it that no one ever made a viral video about 5 year old kids dying in drone attacks in Pakistan?
Where is our society now?

I'm in no way saying this cyber-bullying issue needs to be overlooked.. HELL NO! We need to address it and stand up against it.
But the point I'm trying to make is we need to stand up and get out against many other issues too.

I agree with Chris22... the video is saddening, it brought me to tears and my heard goes out to her family. But then again... there are hundreds of such (or even worse) things happening every day, why do we all tend to ignore those?

I'm not sure where you and Chris22 are getting that anyone is ignoring these other situations. There are whole organizations built around the death of pakistani children from U.S. bombings, such as Amnesty International for starters. And the American kids committing suicide from the pressures of teenage life has been an ongoing issue since the 1980s. Violence in schools is an ongoing epidemic that has its roots in the problems of bullying and bad parenting. This Amanda Todd situation has everything to do with it.

I guess we're getting into a philosophical area there about why we ignore them.. I would say because it's harder to change things happening so far away and they seem almost surreal sometimes because it's quite far from what we experience in our lives.

Also if we got too consumed by wanting to change everything we would find it hard to function.

I think what's different in this case is that it's something happening right on our doorsteps. She was beat up just outside the school etc. People feel that something could have been done by every day folks, unlike the situations in 3rd world countries where most of us can only make some donations etc

Okay.. my bad, "ignoring" was not the right word.
Yeah there are NGOs working... and guess what? They're all politicized and do what government(s) want them to do.

I say so because I've been there and seen things myself. The media tells you the opposite of reality.

I enjoy reading your posts but beg to differ on this one. What do you mean by 'so far away'... Last time I checked USA policies are made within the USA... no?
The people of Americal don't need to go to Pakistan to stop drones.

Also if we got too consumed by wanting to change everything we would find it hard to function.

Exactly.. and IMO killings/death of thousands of people is more important than death of one girl (again, no disrespect to Amanda)... or yeah cyber-bullying has caused many deaths.. but still not THOUSANDS.

Its not about donations... all people need to do is unite against the policies and bring a change by being UNITED. You, me or him and can't do it all alone.

I understand what you're saying, but you've misinterpreted my points.

When I say far away I'm talking about the fact that the problems in 3rd world countries are so different than the problems we face here which makes it harder for people to relate.

I'm talking more about the psychological reasons behind people's emotions as they pertain to various tragedies.

When I say it's easier for people to change things at home I mean, one person can make a massive change by reaching out to help someone like Amanda, but it's much much harder for one person to make a massive change in Pakistan etc. Do you see what I'm saying? I'm not saying which is more important, but rather why I think the Amanda situation has more of an impact on society as a whole than things that happen in Pakistan.

I don't agree as such that the killings of thousands of people is more important than the death of one girl. I don't ascribe to that kind of logic. I think one death is as much of a tragedy as a thousand deaths.

It's difficult, is one persons life worth less than 10 people?? I would be equally saddened if one child died in a drone attack, or 5 in a cinema shooting. A loss of life through needless action should never be brushed off easily.

Im not trying to, or want to get in to comparisons over which is worse, as that is just subjective opinion. But I think it is always easier empathise with something you have experienced and understand, so for a lot of people on here, they have never experienced a drone attack - and never will, so it is more difficult to grasp, while they may be able to comprehend bullying and a loss of a girls life more easily - they aren't suggesting one is worse than the other.

EDIT- looks like bt said most of what I did in the above post.

Yes, these things sounds true only in books.

Well.. to each their own.

I'm out.

Don't get offended!

Think about this. Imagine you had to choose between 100 people and 1 life. You *HAD* to spend a week getting to know the 1 single life before making the decision. Imagine how heart breaking it would be to have to make the cold hard logical choice.

*that* is what I mean when I say losing one life is as tragic as 100 or 1000. I'm saying that EVERYONE deserves to live and deserves a chance. I don't like the idea of calculating, ranking and weighing up lives against each other.

YES! You got it. You understood exactly what I meant.

1 life = infinity

100 * infinity = infinity

For a long time there was a website like facebook, but it was made to tell things about other people. Some kids committed suicide... . It's a real big problem here.
This site was sometimes getting hacked, just a very sad text was left on this page. It's unbelivable what people are able to do with others life and even got fun with it.

I know some people in my near surroundings who needed to change school and so on because of social networks, too. Very sad :|

Haha J Bentham can suck my nuts. Utilitarianism can be cold.

Anway, bk- I appreciate your thoughtfulness and opinion when replying. A differing in stance is never bad.

LOL what makes you think I'm offended by what you said? :)

You guys do have a point.

But what I wanted to say is... we need to get our priorities right.

Which one of these would you try to fix first?

1) Something thats happening over and over again and taking 5-6 lives almost every day.
or
2) Something thats happening all the time and takes 1-2 lives every week?

Again I'm in no way offended and I like having a healthy discussions with my BHW friends. I said "I'm out" because its 11pm here and I'm having chronic back pain (a constant issue). Need some sleep.

No problem. :) I wasn't sure, as these are sensitive topics of discussion.

In response to your question about which I'd fix first then yes I of course agree that you would give priority to 1, but I would also strive not to ignore 2 just because of the numbers.

It's a lonely world and I'd like to think that even people in the minority can get help because they're human beings rather than having to be in the worst affected group.

It's obviously difficult because we all know you can't help everyone and if you face that fact head on it can be painful.

:hijacked:

Tumblr is loaded with such similar teen girls who are doing instagram stuff. I think they try to portray themselves strong but in reality they are not. Just like coppercab guy on youtube. When you do lot of showoff, there is some sort of insecurity in your head. She allowed others to take her picture and shared it on net, this was strike 3, should have stopped there or atleast develop enough skin to tolerate. It's sad world with population moving towards the internet, women needs to develop thick skin and so should their support people like family and friends. It could happen to anyone of our friends.

Apparently they can't trace the guy, what a load of bullshit.

And wtf, here is an event on FB made by the entire retarded circles of people who mocked her, and continues to joke about her death as well.

https://www.facebook.com/events/326141947484903/
I didn't find the event, I assume FB deleted it?

If anyone saw it, knows the creator of the events (even those attending), I think you'd be doing the world a service by hacking the shit out of all their stuff. Sign it, the Ghost of Amanda Todd (morbid I know). Perhaps they'll think better of pulling this type of thing in the future. Reason and compassion will not work with them, but f'ing up their stuff might.

A non-psychopath bully after suicide would not participate in a 'suicide celebratory party' etc.

A single psychopath is dangerous enough, but a group of them is devastating as is evidence here. :-/

That has all taken place after the fact. The people who created the celebratory pages are not the same people who bullied her. They are from 4c***, and they are just trying to piss people off. It was most likely just 1 person who caused most of the damage to her, and not a group.

People need to realize that most bullies are kids too. People say she made mistakes because she was just a kid, well guess what, I promise you that most bullies are just kids too and don't think of the consequences their actions have. It is tragic what happened, but just as this girl didn't think of the consequences of her actions such as having sex with another girls boyfriend or creating child pornography, the bullies most likely didn't think of the consequences of their actions either.

We need more education and help for people that are bullies too. I have been on both sides of the coin. I was bullied horribly growing up because I had bad skin, bad clothes, horribly bad teeth, I was skinny and weak, I had asthma, I was poor. I got my ass kicked often, and told that if I ever showed my face in school, I was going to get beaten even more. I faked sick many days to skip school because I was afraid. I never told my mom, because I didn't want her to get involved. I don't blame those guys now, I would shake their hand and hope they offer an apology, but even if they didn't, it wouldn't bother me.

I have also teased and bullied people. I started to watch pro wrestling and practice moves with my friends to be able to fight a little better when I got in high school. There was a kid much bigger than me, who I picked a fight with and choked until he "tapped out" in front of the entire class. I wanted to embarrass him and make myself seem cool. I feel horrible about it now, but at the time, I was justifying it by saying he was bigger than me. I absolutely humiliated him, multiple times, in front of hundreds of other kids.

I had an adult friend meet some people from my high school when I wasn't around, and they apparently they described me as an "a$$hole". I don't know if I was or wasn't. It was so long ago. I thought I was decently nice to most people, but maybe I was a total jerk. I have made a lot of mistakes in my life I want to take back, but they are done, and they can't be undone.

The bullies didn't force this girl to show her breasts in the first place. The bullies didn't force her to have sex with someone elses boyfriend. The bullies didn't force her to commit suicide. She was an emotionally disturbed young girl, and unfortunately it doesn't seem like there was much anyone could do for her. She seems like when people stepped in to help, she told them everything was fine and it was all her fault. She says that if you watch the video. Also, her video is about "being strong" and "being a survivor", so she probably told people she wasn't suicidal anymore, and she wanted to be an inspiration and help others.

Our world can't afford to offer real help to every child who is bullied or expresses suicidal thoughts. We just can't afford it financially. Parents can't afford to keep moving or putting themselves in different schools. Schools can't kick out every person accused of bullying, and there are always two sides to every story, and school officials rarely get the whole truth.

My point here:
Don't put all the the blame on bullies when things like this happen. Just like a kid showing their breasts on the internet, they aren't thinking of the consequences. Girls put on webcam shows to try to feel better about themselves and more loved, bullies tease or beat up other kids to make themselves feel better and more powerful.

We need more education and help for BOTH sides. Bullies are rarely very happy with their lives.
