"Reviving" & re-monetizing Expired Domains from archive.org

Found a few domains with the help of Spamzilla.

I realize most expired sites have already been vetted by the pros and I am basically sorting through the scraps, but like the saying goes, ones mans trash is another mans treasure....maybe I'll get lucky.

My search criteria is:

  • Currently indexed
  • Dropped only once
  • PA / DA of 20+
  • No spammy backlinks ( this is hard )
  • Found some expired domains but open to auctions
  • Searching for blogs
  • ....any recommendations?


Using the Wayback export tool on Spamzilla, I plan on recreating these sites and monetizing them.

  • Is this a bad idea or a viable business model?
  • Are cease and desists common due to copy-write infringement?
  • Should I recreate the site in its entirety immediately or slowly add pages over time?

Just dont mess with big ones and not end up being sued.

Thank you, I am just going after the small but relevant sites. A blog someone gave up on or forgot about.
 
Maybe you can profit mostly for 301 redirects. Also WayBack Time Machine is not for all the URLs, it will grab home page and some of the pages but not all the website.

Well that sucks. I will have to rely on getting lucky and finding a mostly complete archive or are there any other tools for finding old content?
 
What if adsense was banned on old domain ? Can putting your adsense on revived url hurt your adsense account?

Well you can check to see if your site was blocked for adsense by running it through bannedcheck or another ban checking website.

That's a good question about flagging or corrupting an existing adsense account if adding it to a revived website. I guess if it did not have adsense before then you are fine.

I have made sure to get a scrape of the site where you can strip all of the analytics and trackers but I will go over it manually to make sure there is nothing remaining that can point back to a former owner.

With such criteria, you will find only the shit.
Even you not need to analyze the backlinks, because it's enough clear that

Good domains have good ranking, because they have good backlinks.
And doesn't matter in this case any stupid and useless metrics and wasting hours for checking backlinks, which anyway you'are not able to valuate.

I appreciate your advice. Since I am new to this, what metrics do you recommend I search for?

Search engine traffic is the thing, that confirming:

- Google index
- No penalty
- Valuable links (especially with a bit competitive phrases )

When we talking about metrics - TTF + TF/CF as Google use currently similar algorithm in NEW Pagerank.
Where Moz and Ahrefs base on old outdated Pagerank formula and for this reason are useless.

For me, the blogs as assets, because have much more value for many reasons.
But anyway, some job is needed to fixing DMCA issues.

In some cases, fixing such issues mean significantly cost,
especially when such blog have a lot of posts.

Also you should have the right software, which will be able to convert archive.org
into the WP without any footprints visible for Google.

Thank you for the advice Greg, I have a lot of work ahead of me!

I don't understand TTF much, but the site is niche focused and the backlinks are also related to the niche.

Regarding DMCA issues, I doubt a small blogger will go after me.
Worst case i get a cease & desist?
Or I can just use a DMCA ignore hosting service.

I am using ARCHIVARIX, as recommended in another post in BHW. I will check to see if there are any traces of archive.org in their download.

If you not will fix the DMCA issues, any person can submit it to Google, as the result you'll lose the ranking and traffic.
If you not will fix the DMCA issues, you can't sell the blog, especially with your links inside the posts ;)

Choose only the good ones, which are worth money to rewrite the articles + cost of images.
And voila, you're the blogger - where traffic mean the Google trust.

But you already have it, because you not was stupid enough, to buy just worthless metrics without any traffic.

While most would work fine, as those are already expired, or the previous company that owns that domain already closed, and you shouldn't have any take-down demands from these, just that the good ones are normally snapped up by those pbn resellers, and most that are left are primarily those that are spammed to death, has no traffic, or wouldn't contribute or do anything positive. But surely, there is a lot of expired content that can be extracted in the process.

I am new to this and that is what I am seeing, basically junk with a few tiny unpolished gems here and there.

As long as there is good and unique content and the domain has not been spammed with crappy backlinks, I might give it a shot. I don't mind waiting for results after fine tuning the site and working on SEO.
