For about half of a year I have been trying to knock a nasty review about me down on google. I know nothing about all this stuff and have been using fiverr. When I tried positive SEO for other sites, it would work marginally well (the bad site would only go down a few), but the gains were temporary. I've tried negative SEO and it looks like the same thing is happening.

What is the best place for me to learn about the basics of effective reputation management?

The basics would begin with what you learned thus far... not to sound like a wise guy but there is value in what you learned.

Basics won't cut it for a professional job.
Don't expect a 5.00 service to handle a professional job like what you are looking for.
Don't expect results to be overnight.
Neg SEO is not your go to either.

Pay a professional to handle that for you.

I'd recommend MassMediaPr.net for that... it is not cheap but you get what you pay for.

You're doing rep management with $5? Instead of learning (since I see this is really important to you) why don;t you hire a real company to replace those bad reviews with other, newly created, sites.

I'm not a business - just an individual. It's more along the lines of someone writing a nasty blog about me. So pretty much it would be insanely time consuming the learn and will take tons of time mastering and therefore I'm best off seeking professional help?

Are they telling the truth? If not, you can sue them for libel, and get compensation for damages and emotional distress.

All you have to do is create enough instances of your name or whatever information is being seen, then promote these until you drive the bad stuff off the first page.

NOTE: There is no easy way to do this. It takes effort and time, which is why it is so expensive.

If you go to these places and create a presence, then spend some time building out these properties with quality content, then promote the hell out of them, some should soon start to outrank the bad one.

I can feel for you dude and i am no expert in this, so can't really advice anything. I guess you would need more budget and an expert. If you tell us what you already did ( talking about the methods), you would get a better suggestion for sure.

Well - I can't do anything about this person because she isn't in the United States and will never come to the United States. At any rate, what really concerns me is the back and forth we had in the comment section, which makes me look bad.

Pretty much what I have done thus far is about 15 or so fiverr link pyramids with various links. I have a lot of stuff out there on the web - I've written articles for the New York Times etc... but I couldn't even get those boosted above her blog except for brief periods. Aside from the link pyramids I've done about 15 negative SEO comment blasts at around 250k a blast. Sorry if I am not using the right terminology, but that is pretty much what I have done.

Just do what Techxan suggests and see where you are after a few months. You might be golden.

Is there anything special I need to do? I've had facebook since 2004. Should I just do a bunch of comments etc? What constitutes promoting.

Just pay a professional, learning reputation management with your own campaign is a stupid idea.

Paying a professional will make sure that the job is done correctly and you don't do more damage than good.

If you have to ask then you definitely should be hiring someone who knows what they're doing. This is not something you can hand off to some cheap foreign worker and expect good results.

You have two choices:

1. Hire a professional
2. Thoroughly learn how to do it yourself without shortcuts

How much would it e to get a professional to take care of this for me? How long would it take me to learn sufficiently to do it myself (and where would I go to learn?)

You are not learning a different skill for this - it's SEO - instead of controlling the #1 position for a keyphrase you need to control every position on the first page. Start learning the basics of SEO. A couple of the easiest properties to put past it will be http://keyphrase.tumblr.com, http://keyphrase.blogspot.com, http://www.youtube.com/keyphrase - start with those and then you have a shitload more on the list above. Just be thankful you are dealing with an individual blogger on an independent blog, which is what it sounds like. If it was rip off report or scambook are way fucking harder to beat back.

A free site that can help you manage this type of stuff is Brand Yourself. Their free service can at least help you figure out how visible your Facebook, Twitter, etc. are and point out some other sites to help boost your rankings (e.g. about.me). catnipking and Techxan have good advice too - the more stuff out there that is linked to you, the better your chances of outranking your hater.

If you go to that site I suggested above I think you can get away with about 400.00.

thanks for all the resources. Looks like I will be busy for the next few weeks going through all of this... Just a quick aside - why isn't negative SEO for me?

Negative SEO low quality link"blasts" rarely work. Might have done a couple of years back when Google invented "Spam For Cash", now - not so much.
Stupid idea anyway.
Neg SEO works, but those that do it go out of their way to mimic semi sensible, but increasingly desperate real site owners - for the most part outright low quality link spam is just ignored both for positive or negative benefits. Most of the time - not all.

Spend half a day creating profiles on some high PR sites in your own name. There is a list above - Time 4 hours - Cost Free
Go to a service like "Iwriter" and get some reviews or yourself as a person written - Pay $7 for 500 words. Get say 10? Time an hour - Cost $70

Post these on your new blogs, post some other content on them over the next couple of weeks. Just snippet stuff. Syndicate articles from elsewhere (syndicate properly - don't just copy and paste)

Time 4 hours total - Cost Free

Then, after a few weeks have past, promote the frick out of these profiles.
NY times doesn't work so well. I've got actual mentions on authority blogs in Forbes, Bloomberg etc.
Not "comments" but my name actually mentioned as an SEO guy in the body of the blogs.
Very hard to push these to rank for YOUR NAME. They might rank for the subject of the article or a few associated phrases, but not for your name. Better to create your own network.

Failing that, pay $500 to get someone to do all this for you.

Thanks Scritty. Would you also recommend massmediapr for this service ? I take it that they are pretty much creating content that will go ahead of the bad link rather than pushing already existing things ahead of the bad link?

It's been my experience that it isn't hard to rank for someones name. Do a video with your name first and what you do second in the title and it should rank on page 1 almost immediately. Make sure to put your name in the title of each post and video and maybe create a YouTube channel with just your name on it as well. You can back link the hell out of Web 2 assets like Blogger and Tumblr and YouTube videos seems to respond well also. Check the back link profile on the post that's giving you the problem. Use Majestic SEO or something similar. This will tell you how much work you need to do to push her off page 1. If the offending blog post has a lot of PA page authority you may have a bit of a problem. My guess is it probably doesn't. Just create 10 or more posts and videos of good content off your site, and then do some serious back linking. I outranked a lawyer with his name in the title of a hangout in less than 5 minutes. Once you figure it out, sell it as a service to leverage your knowledge. If you have any questions let me know.
