Somebody claimed the keyword "reddit" as name for his subreddit, they simply closed it to avoid confusion.
The founders should have done the same as with u/reddit. But I guess, this is their way of fixing their mistake.

I am surprised they didn't disallow their own brand's name from being taken by someone else on their brand website.
