Rebuilding a deindexed site

I had a niche website in partnership with someone around 5 years back. The site had decent amounts of content and started to get some revenue. But, both of us wanted to go in a different direction. So, it fizzled out and I got out of the picture and let him continue with it. He went on for a while and moved on to other things.

So, its been over a year and half since the site is down. He gave the domain back to me as I want to rebuild it and give it a shot. The site is completely deindexed since its been down for more than a year. The domain holds a PR 1 and has some backlinks pointed to it. I see most of the articles are there on way back machine. I have some doubts and would appreciate any tips on this.

1. The content that was written for the site were general articles on the niche and not specifically targeted towards easier keywords. I am considering just rebuilding the site as it, using same titles and urls used previously and not focus on SEO for the old articles. Instead, I want to do fresh keyword research and post articles targeting keywords that are monetizable and easier to rank and carry out SEO for this. Recreating the old urls will also help because there are a few backlinks to previous URL's and could help.

2. Another approach I am considering is to use previous articles and try to find good keywords for them. There are some good articles suitable for this and I could post them with different title and URL targeting the new keywords and do SEO based on this. But, that would mean I lose out on any link juice that was pointed to previous URL's

So, how do I go about this?

Depending on the reason why your website was deindexed, you can either continue using the old domain and hope that Google reindexes it or you can change the domain name.

With that said, I would recommend rewriting the old articles, finding new keywords that they can compete for, and optimising the articles.

If it was delisted due to bad reasons then you got to start over
 
i would also support starting it from a new fresh domain
 
Guys. The Site was not deindexed due to any penalty. The hosting went down for over a year. So, eventually google deindexed it coz the site was not up...

Okay, I figured that's what happened, but thank you for clearing that up.

In addition to the suggestion in my previous post, here are some instructions on getting the domain reindexed:
  1. Go to Google Webmaster Tools and expand the "Crawl" option
  2. Click on "Fetch as Google".
  3. Click "Fetch" or "Fetch and Render"
  4. Once Google finishes processing the fetch, use the "Submit to Index" option to let Google know that you are ready for their web crawler to crawl your website
 
Thanks for your replies guys. The biggest problem as mentioned in the OP is that I am wondering if should recreate the same URL as it was before the site went down so that old backlinks pointed towards individual pages can be utilised. Only problem is that the older URL was not made keeping keywords in mind.

I am considering just recreating pages that have backlinks pointed towards them and then edit other articles and optimize them and the url structure for keywords.
 
Just Re-do everything like it was before the site went down. But you should keep in Mind that the game has really changed, but not that Much though.

You can copy back the article, use the same Permalink, but if the permalink is not well seo structured, that is where you can change it. But i think, you should rebrand the website and if you have the money, polish the articles a bit, by adding more articles to the existing articles, and buy some high quality service to the website, it might come back to rank higher.

After all, it's a game, there are winners and losers. Hope you'll be on the winners side again.
 
There is a huge difference between deindexed and dropped from index. Your site was dropped from index. Deindexed domains won't get indexed again, ever.

Thank you very much for clarifying that. No wonder many people were talking about penalties!
 
if that's the case then, you may try reindexing it.Google takes it's time.BTW did you do a site:domain.com search? just to make sure ,it is deindexed completly

In google index, it was showing the parked page. Anyways, I posted a few articles and slowly, each of them are getting indexed. The only issue at hand is whether to

1.recreate the old site completely with same urls and articles and write new articles focussed on keywords and SEO these
or

2. recreate only articles that have backlinks towards them and do keyword research and on page optimisation for other articles and post them on different urls

I would go with the first option. That said, find out if the archived pages have been indexed in Google. If they have, I wouldn't repost them on the site because it would be seen as duplicate content.
 
Yup.i'd also take the option one and also make sure to pass the old link juice to my domain,if it worth something.Put some quality content on your site and build some quality links to them.that will do.
 
if you wanted it's juice do redirect 301 to new site and build that up ;)
