I've installed graphics cards before, but have never had so much trouble with this new one going into my desktop.

The computer HAD an nvidia 9600GT, which worked fine, but I decided to upgrade to an XFX Radeon 6770 HD.

I uninstalled all of the drivers for the nvidia (Unless there are some hidden in the reg), powered the computer down, removed the nvidia, then installed the new card in the PCI express slot.

I plugged the monitor into the new card, started it up, only to get nothing.

So I removed the card, started up in VGA to try and install the drivers before putting the card in.
I got them all installed, but in my device manager something is not right, it shows: "Other Devices" --> "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)" - It shows nothing about AMD or anything which is blowing my mind (Even after the drivers say they're installed)


Need help, I'm ready run head first into a wall.

tl;dr -
Can't install new gfx card, need someone to hop on team viewer with me to help find the problem.

without looking up the stats of the card im just wondering if it needs power? most video cards for gaming require addition power sources if so be sure they are plugged in. Usually they will have a 4 pin plug on them if they require power I have even seen some with two 4 pin connectors.

I've already got a 600 watt power supply, this isn't my first rodeo, but this one has me completely stumped. The card only calls for 500 watts, so that's not the problem.

sounds like a driver issue. You should have the drivers in a folder, or drive, then in device manager upgrade the driver, then it should install it correctly.
 
no I understand that but is there a power connector on the video card itself? you know how when you plug in a hard drive one cord is for power and one is for data? well newer video cards need you to plug your power supply into them as well while some just draw power from pci express slot

It doesn't display anything in the device manager though, it only shows what I posted in the OP. Maybe I'm just illiterate to this kind of stuff. How can I upgrade the driver if it's not showing in my device manager? I think that's what I mean, I'm not exactly sure, unless I'm just completely missing something.

Yeah, I never forget to plug in the 4 prong power supply. I think this is all just a driver issue that I can't figure out.
 
What I dont get is you say when you plug the card in you get nothing. Well when you first plug your graphics card in you should always have video without the need of installing drivers... maybe I dont understand your original post

That's usually the case, where you should get display no matter what, but it's not always true. Sometimes there are conflicting drivers, a messed up BIOS, or something.

I just can't figure it out, and I need some type of card guru to help me figure this out, I've got video editing that needs to be done! Hah

I'm not sure to be honest, how could I check? I mean it does have an on board VGA port that came on the computer, but I don't know if that constitutes for an on board video card.

I have yet to run into that issue, in my case when something like that happened it turned out to be either a hardware problem or a power problem.
 
Sometimes the answer is more simple than you might think. Companies send hardware that suddenly fails all the time, you might've gotten unlucky and stumbled across one. You might just have to take the gfx card back and ask for a replacement.

Tlommy has a good point, if it isn't "coming alive" at all than it's probably what I said. You don't need drivers for the graphics card to start working.

Thank you! Im telling you man you dont know how many computer builds I have been through where it was just a simple power or hardware problem. Its a bitch sometimes but with computers you always want to start with the stupid things
 
This is the second card from that company that I've gotten because I ran into the same issue with the first one, so the likelihood of getting 2 defective ones in a row is low.

I think I'm trying to avoid it being my computer that is the problem. I seriously do think the bios may have something to do with it if i've got an on board video card.

Idk. My brain is hurting.

Oh yeah, I definitely have not written off your advice, I have the upgraded power supply to 600 wats, I've made sure the card has the analog power supply plugged in (4 prong) and I've made sure I've not missed anything on the physical install of the card.

I do appreciate the comments!

im sure your computer has on board video... ok do this man turn on your computer with the card plugged in and see if the fan on the card spins up if not then im telling you its a power issue, especially since you already replaced the card once.

edit- hey if the fans do spin up on your new card I just read somewhere (altho never had to do this) that you can turn off on-board video through bios and the video card should work... Now like I said I have never heard of such a thing but who knows might be worth a look around

Just to clarify you have the 6-pin pci-e power connection plugged into the motheroard right? I did some research and others that were facing the same problem noted that their card wasn't working until they plugged it in; the box didn't tell them about the power connection being a necessity either.
