Hi folks, hope everyone will have a cracking new year celebration :)
But just before the party starts I got a big question in regards to the importance of alt text in seo.
I am just starting with seo and I am wondering is it possible to rank a website with just alt image text?

The reason I am asking is that I got a website to rank (my first site) - that is a self hosted PR2 wp site, but all this themes homepage can offer is just a bunch of full size images (or slideshows) . It is a photographers website :)
There is no way I can talk the photographer into having a lot of text on the home page. So I am thinking that maaaaybe it might be possible to rank the home page by alt text in the image?

If the answer is yes, then I got another question, in wp media all the images got and alternative text, description and caption options those all can accommodate content/text. Maybe that will be a way to go too? If yes than what would be the ratio of text distribution in all of them (alternative text, description and caption) Lets say I can have 1000 word of content in every image?
    so like
100w of alternative text with main kw, 600 of description with long tails and 300 caption with long tails?
I just made those numbers up randomly :) But I want to hear what you guys can say about this theory.

Some additional info Just in case
I've got a few plugins installed at the moment like:

Yoast Seo - for easy tags tiles and metas
    BigG's analytics and xml sitemaps
Microblog poster - for posting posts and blog posts to quite a few social networks
Also I got a feedburner installed today

My off site strategy will start with building quality handmade web2.0, manual commenting from scrapebox, and a few guest posts for start :)

So again, as a recap, my questions are
    - is it possible to use only alt text for ranking a page
    - Can i also input text in description and caption of the image for seo sake
    - what os the ratio main KW and long tails of text in alternative image text, image description and image caption !

    cheerio !

And best wishes to BHW members in New Year!
Hope everyone one will get even more crazy monkey in their paypal account :D

You can add the description for each image in its own <noscript> tag.

    Okay, thanks for that!
But, lets say, I will also include titles, meta descriptions and meta kw? And lots of Content in the alternative text and description?
Probably that will help but not much. Is there a workaround in my situation? Probably not, but just asking :) Something like a trick where content that is not visible for the viewer but all good for G ? :D Just learning here :) let me know if some workaround in available!
Or, as a solution, I will have to rank the inner pages :)

If you want to get more fancy, you could implement popovers which will show all the related text when a cursor is hovered over an image or some other element. This content is usually in a hidden div which is visible to the search engines thereby giving them more content.

You'll need to experiment tons. It takes time and hard work to arrive at the perfect setup and obviously there is no formula. If there was one, everyone would rank #1 and that's not possible.

If you overdo it, titles, alt tags, etc, you'll overoptimize and it'll demote you, so keep it natural. On-page SEO is more about the quality of the site, html validity, speed, etc, rather than stuffing kw's all over the place.

Okay, i see :) is there a proper guide though where I can make a right on page seo? I recently found a great post abut it here, it was much ore than the usual, tiles and stuff, but as you said it was about the page speed , the folders names where media is uploaded and about other bunch of things as well as a few web services those can help (like make the image size smaller, batch resize the thumbnails and do something with code on page ) Maybe you know of a guide like that? I would appreciate it a lot :)

Search bing or duckduckgo for a "onpage seo checklist". Adapt the checklist items to your reality, remember there is no formula.

if you just get simple mind to do the website, it will be good, but for seo, we say no. there is no unchanging factor in the seo, but the content and text will play the important role, always. For you Questions, i think the normal way is the best way to do the job. If you are the visitor see the images with 1k words description? what you think about it?
i mean for the image, you may add a short description for it, just describe what are the images about, and contain your target words, that would be fine.
