Ranking for your own name

Ok, so I'm trying to rank my personal homepage to the first page in google, currently at around page 5 when searching my name. Competition here is 10 guys with the same name and their social media profiles. Sounds easy but as a complete newbie in SEO I'm struggling with this a bit.

What I've done:
  • Built a static website from HTML template, MyNameIRL.com domain name, ~300 words content total and embedded social media profiles.
  • Basic SEO, metadescriptions and schema.org/person markup. Still a ton of work to do everything properly.
  • Linked to the website in all of my social media profiles.
  • Bought 800 "social signals" from Fiverr for 5$ (possibly a mistake?)
  • Registered to Google webmasters and submitted a sitemap

So my question is, what should I do in this situation to improve the ranking? There are a bunch of things I could do but have no idea which ones are actually important for ranking. Generally speaking, how does one rank for their own name?

For starters, Vodka and Cola is not an ideal combination.

Secondly, I'd ask a guy like @Sherbert Hoover hoover to pop in here for you as your question is really an ORM one and he sits in a little room doing ORM all day long. In fact I've heard that to eat they order thin crusted pizza and slip it under the door so he does not starve.
 
Why not just install WordPress + Yoast SEO (do everything it says regarding the on-page SEO), I would suggest to do 1,000 words on a homepage. I am certain you can brainstorm 1K words about yourself. Then add social profiles on widgets, have a link in signature here and on all social profiles.

Because I'm cheaping out with the hosting and using Amazon S3. But the more I get into it the more it seems like it's not really worth the hassle to do everything myself in HTML.

EDIT: Found an answer to my own problem :rolleyes: I could install wordpress for site creation and still use S3 for hosting with this: wordpress.org/plugins/simply-static/

try it for the start with the description and title. So that ur name is more often in ur description and title as in the competitors. But take care that it doesnt look like spam otherwise ur done. If u would tell us ur domain we could have a look and give u more detailed ideas ;)
 
Hmm, tough one. I'd say keep creating/interlinking content and profiles. Personal branding websites, online CV sites, etc. are perfect for that and can be great parasites + give you extra backlinks.
 
I have done this and it not as easy as it seems.

the first problams is your name might be a name that a famous person has got aswell, or someone very active online that got the same name as you.

you got to research your name on google indexed and see how many are pointing to a website where your name is mentioned and your need to also register on them to boost your website.

know you need to go to every social and website that your name is added and create your own accounts and point a link back to your website page this includes images and video.

after that , you need to get good strong web2.0 backlinks with grate articles about you and a link pointing back to your website in the article.


when that all done , then a bit of promotting in your name with blog and yt.

Ok, a quick update. Here's what I've done:
  • registered to a bunch of job application and social media sites with link to my site in the profile
  • added some content, still not at 1000 words
  • fixed the HTML a bit more, added correct meta tags for everything, alt tags for every image, even more schema tags
  • got my 800 super spammy fiverr links delivered, now a bit scared of possible negative effects
And here is where I've gotten:
  • desktop results page one in google, 6th place
  • mobile results 2nd page
  • mobile and desktop search results both top results 3 for search "Name Surname Title"

Maybe mobile site optimization is the way to go now?
 
Fiverr was definitely a mistake. You keep building up your page, add more content if possible and eventually you should get ranked on the first page. Best of Luck. :)
 
I too have issues trying rank my name. However this is due to all the BBC and ITV news articles about my chequered past.
 
Yea, it highly depends on your 'name' 's overall competition as well - if your name is the same as a famous person, of course, the site that is featuring the famous person would get the highlight, as they may already be the authority website for the searched keyword.
Well there are a couple of things that you can do -
1) Boost your site's authority - getting high quality links to link to your site would boost your site's authority
2) Buy expired domains with authority links and 301 those sites back to yours to boost authority
3) Buy more social media likes/signals, to make your site look legit
