The past couple of years we've all seen enormous fluctuations in Google ranks from the implementation of the various Panda and Penguin updates. During this time period it appears that the Bing/Yahoo serps have been much more stable. The search volumes for Bing and Yahoo are certainly much smaller, in most cases, and yet they are still quite huge and a great opportunity.

It may be almost impossible for many keywords to rank at the top for both Google and Bing/Yahoo at the same time.

If you were to choose to go after Bing/Yahoo and forget about Google... what would you do different? What works better in Bing and Yahoo vs. Google.

Exact match domain?
High pr links? (yes I know pr is a google concept)
Edu and gov links?
Web 2.0?
Social Bookmarks?
Article Directories?
Yahoo Answers?
Forum posts?
Blog comments?
On page titles, h1's etc, meta descriptions?

I think there are some great opportunities here if we can all better understand the methods of ranking in Bing and Yahoo. A smaller but more stable and less competitive area.

Any insights or experiences would make for a great discussion. I'd love to do narrow some of this down and do some new testing.

Thread bookmarked! I've been wondering the same. I hope some experienced members jump in. People here "got skillz" it amazes me.

interested in improving ranks in yahoo too. what i have learnt so far for bing is important to have emd or keyword in url if you target a lot of them.dont know how true it is but yahoo links have also influence on bing. anything else guys?

interested in this too, hopefully someone skilled can give us more info.

Yahoo no longer builds there own serps. It's all served up from bing so if you get it right you get both.

My top money site right now is yahoo/bing traffic and I have no idea how this happened. Google loved me and yahoo/bing followed. That happened quite awhile ago and there has been thousands of SEO updates/changes since. I need to learn to optimize specific for yahoo/bing not goog.

Yahoo = Bing. In my observation Bing put more weight on EMD compare to Google. The rest are pretty much the same I guess.

Here's a good read:

Suppose to be url here :P

Sorry, can't post URL yet, just google "four-areas-of-search-and-social-focus" an article from Bing Webmaster tool. A good read, really and I believe it applies to Google as well.

Here's the url for the article...

It's a good overview...not focused though on kinds of links or on page matter.

If I recall I set up some type of yahoo/bing account or webmaster tool IDK, I'll have to look again. I submitted my sites through their tools section to see if it would make any difference as far as indexing or placement or anything and it did not.

its good to get top10 in yahoo and bing, but how get traffic from it?

Bing and Yahoo place much more emphasis on backlinks.

In the past if you were able to 'cut it' at google, bing and yahoo more or less followed for the same KW. The strategy employed for google worked for all of them.

Both of these search engines gather <30% than the overall traffic available so do not expect any great shakes. That said if times are lean then any traffic is better than none.

From personal experience, google is faster at everything, indexing, ranking... just everything. So your site shows up on google first, then a couple of days later bing will follow, I've noticed that while google indexes most of the pages on a website, bing only indexes the ones that have the most backlinks.

So to your question, I don't think you cannot just focus on one search engine, if you rank in one the others will follow, but from personal experience bing/yahoo are far easier to rank in than google.

I rank on Bing and Yahoo with anchor text blog and guestbook comments alone, although rarely intentionally. I just notice the sites where the only backlinking I've done is those two methods tend to rank high on Bing and Yahoo but not necessarily on Google.

I've heard that bing basically just steals google serp results.

Regardlesss, I don't see anything new and exciting that webmasters need to do in order to rank in all 3 search engines. It's all the same - the stuff you do for google rank will also result in bing/yahoo rank.

I consistently rank in the top three on Bing for almost every keyword I target, but despite Yahoo = Bing, my Yahoo results vary greatly, often times Yahoo will show that my site is much lower in ranking than if I Bing search it, even if I make sure every possible human error variable in search has been removed, even if I use software like SEO Powersuite on multiple computers, I get different rankings on Yahoo than I do Bing. How can this be so if Bing powers the Yahoo results?

That's exactly what I've not seen. There are certainly cases where your rank could be so strong for a keyword that you'll rank at the top for both of them but in many cases it's anything but the same results.

why would you worry about Bing or Yahoo or MSN or whatever when Google receives 90+ % of all searches done on the internet?

That may be true in some countries. In the U.S. Bing and Yahoo account for almost 30% of traffic. For some keywords Bing and Yahoo customers also convert at dramatically higher rates. I've been able to prove that out many times with ppc traffic. That combo equals huge opportunity.

90% of the Internet....in certain countries. Other countries love Bing and Yahoo, and in the United States specific demographics "trust" Yahoo and Bing more than they do Google, thanks to shitty news stories. Which is good for me. I target old people. Old people in the US love Internet Explorer, Bing, and Yahoo.
