So I have an authority site with 40 articles and building. The niche is rather competitive. So I decided to just rank on long tails for now. Each article is written for a long tail. I made a few web 2s and back linked them with GSA Ser. The web 2s are only linking to 3 of my articles at the moment. Those are the only keywords actually ranking for me in google now. So my question is in order to rank all my longtails, will I need to back link them in the web 2s individually? That is, pretty much write an extra article for each article I already have. I guess I could link multiple times to different articles in the web2 posts, but I thought that might look a little unnatural/overdoing it.

The other question is since I'm only trying to rank for longtails, I pretty much skipped trying to rank for a few main keywords. Bad? When ranking for these main keywords, should I just link to the main index with keyworded anchor text?

    Thanks a lot.

Take full advantage of your web 2.0s by linking to your homepage and 2 internal pages from within each article. To rank for all 40 long tail keywords, you have to build links to each article on your site. This wouldn't have been necessary if your homepage had a lot of authority. But it's a new site, so no homepage authority.

Focusing on the long tail keywords first is the right way to target keywords on a site. While trying to improve your ranking position for your main keyword, build links to your homepage with diverse anchor texts (url, branded, exact, partial, generic) rather than using just keyword anchor text.

Build more authority links to your home page and this will increase the chances of your other pages ranking for long tail. You are doing the right thing by forgetting about the main keywords for now.

Too many people get caught up on 'main keywords' rather than actually building traffic through longtail

That is to much backlinks from one web 2.0.
OP I recommend adding only one link and you can also if you like for less footprint link in the bottom to other authority site that is not your competitor

Thanks for clearing that up. In regards to my main keywords, I'll be back linking anchored text to the index... Anyone have any tips for on page SEO in regards to these main keywords? Should they just be in the index body text as any other keyword?

No, 3 links isn't too much for one web 2.0. Of course it's a no-brainer that each web 2.0 article should link to relevant authority sites.

One web 2.0 with one article linking to the same domain 3 times is to much in my book, but anyway lets agree to disagree.

Put the keyword once in the title, alt tag, and meta description (not imperative) of your index page. Include the keyword several times within the body of your homepage article.

what are your rankings like without backlinks to start with, as you are targeting seemingly low competition longtails?

Yes the longtails aren't competitive but without back links, sometimes they rank 60 and up. When they're back linked they are rank 10-30. Thanks for the help

Yes I always manually build and write unique articles, 600 to 700 words with pictures and videos. Blast with gsa about 1000 links for 2nd tier and 3rd tier about 10000 links. I have good results
