A lot goes into your ranking factor. I've been doing Youtube for the past 6 years started BH and now 100% WH channels. Ranking Algo has changed several times to provide the best experience to their users.
I owned several channels of my own and managed channels for clients with up to 2 million subs and closing at an avg of 20Mill views a month (more or less depending on the season)
So what goes into ranking for searches? (You can obtain traffic from youtube outside the search engine feature but that's for me to keep xD)
Building an Authority channel will help you rank in the long term but let's talk about how does it work for small channels or in our case mostly new accounts.
These are some of the factors I've seen YT take into consideration when ranking your videos (I will list in priority order):
- Proper SEO (Title, Description and Tags. the more relevant the better)
- Watchtime (Minutes Watched)
- Views (Even good quality fake traffic will do the trick)
- Engagement Level (Retention, Likes, Comments, Shares. Priority set in that order)
- Subscribers
There is no exact formula to outrank, YT will determine whether your content is better than your competitors based on these factors.
Also something I'll like to share since no one has mentioned it before. Youtube takes new uploaded videos and usually places them first page for searches. I noticed YT Algo takes these videos cuz of relevancy and date. Figure if a video is uploaded at a recent date it would be more relevant cuz it's "updated". But after a few days or even the same day if your video doesn't meet the criterias to hold your spot, they will send you back and place new videos in front. (I hope that helps spark some ideas xD)
Here is a journey I started using YT if you would like to follow. I haven't updated yet but my one video I made at the beginning and after several days I al ranking anywhere from top 4 up to top 10 for several of my keywords.
