Have you looked through the posts on here? Searched for questions similar to yours? Have you actually read anything?

Sona, I'm surprised to see this concept talked about so frequently today. A few years ago, everyone talked about blog commenting.

It seems like it would be best to leave the comment on a high PR blog, and then add some gasoline by building more links to this page too.

Am I on the right track, or simply way over thinking it?

I think blog commenting is one of the slightly more "controversial" type of links. Some people swear you can get really high rankings and exposure with high PR blog comments on properly filtered blogs, but most people think it's useless and only good for tier 3 indexing. I think it's only good if you REALLY know what you're doing with them, otherwise they don't really have much value.

Well yes, but it also depends on the competition of your keywords.

For example, I have a site with a keyword that has virtually no competition so I am able to rank with just link building and almost no onsite optimization.

However, I have another site with full on site optimization and full link diversity, etc. and the rank is lagging behind.. its increasing just rather slowly because of so much competition.

I'd concur with this reasoning based on having improved the SEO on several sites. The easy to rank keywords are just that--low comp kws can be ranked with second-rate methods like comments. Harder keywords need mostly first class methods, and more of such links in number, to overcome the competition for ranking purposes. So long as the links do not come from spammy comments or sites with low value, you should be alright.

Ranking via linking in general can be done in layers:

1) make sure each keyword that has one page devoted to it (and is mentioned on the main page) gets 10+ diverse hi-authority links per each webpage;
2) create at least one Web 2.0 property linking to each webpage, then get 20-30 hi-authority links on each property (this should bring the rank of the keywords on each subpage into the top 50);
3) interlink each subpage to each other, so that the cross linking of pages that are all receiving heavy hi-authority links benefits each other.

If you have sound on page SEO going on for each lo-comp keyword as well, the total synergy of these elements should end up ranking the kws on the site very high.
