Hey everyone,

It will be short and straight to the point, as always.

So people are mostly focused on Offpage SEO and link building, but those days, without the basics (good Onpage SEO) it will be much harder to rank, even with the best links.

One the most important factors in Onpage SEO is Keyword Density, AKA the number of times the keyword appear in your article.

Those days, if your page is over optimized and spammed with keywords all over the place, it will have really hard time ranking. You probably know that already (that's why you never see over-optimized sites on page 1)

However, people often don't understand this indeed and while they think their article is fine, it's still really over optimized.

Let's say your article is about "Best Blue Widget", and you got a 3k words article, with the exact keyword "best blue widget" repeated just a few times, lets say 5, not over optimized right?

Half right - you are missing a really important point here.

Single Words of the Keyword matter too
I see so many people who think their KW density isn't over optimized because they have "best blue widget" only 5 times, but they do have "widget" and "blue" 100 times.

Do you think it is natural? Not at all

Actually, you shouldn't use the single words (part of the full KW) too much, as your page will be over optimized as well.

So how do I know which Keyword Density to use for single words?
There is a quote: "Doing SEO is like playing Poker VS Google, but they show you their hand on the first page" - what does it mean?

The KW Density you should use is the one your niche wants.

To find out, just search your query in Google, pick the sites on the first page, check their word count with tools like: https://wordcounter.net/website-word-count

Then, use Ctrl+F to check how many times each word exists in the article.

For instance, if your KW is "best blue widget", check how many times "best" repeated, "blue" repeated and "widget" repeated.
Then, check the average KW density for each and match your page to this.

Conclusion
Now after you know how to truly optimize Keyword Density, go check your pages and see which of them are over optimized. Fix them, and watch your ranking jumps (usually after 2-4 weeks).

Wanna see something crazy, I can't post the link because I'm a nube but a competitor site when I google my favorite keyword has like no content on their page, buy google ranks them above the map listings in 1st. The key phrase is 3 words and it shows up 10 freaking times though and the total word count for the page is 320. lol

Just use Serpworx. It integrates with SEMRush, Moz, and Ahrefs. Shows you literally everything you need-kw density, article length, # of backlinks etc. If you could only afford one tool, this is the one you should get.

OP, thanks for this. I believe I'm one of the major victims of this ignorance.

I have still seen over-optimized pages with keyword density over 1-2% for 3-4 word keywords and over 4-5 for 2-3 word keywords ranking on SERP. When you encounter such a situation, what should you do?
I also used the instructions of PHPBUILT, but the results are not always good. One more thing, google currently updates very slowly.

Could you show me an example? From what I've found, you can get to average kw density + 50% without really over optimizing.

From the PHPBUILT's guide, the 3-word keywords we target should stay below 1%, 2-word kws below 2% ... Did you try optimizing over 50% without a penalty?

if you've given the project to a seo agency i guess they might do check this thing for sure?

or

they forget?

Well it may happen maybe when there is no competition, I guess you have to see the KW for this.

I admit that the ON page seo is the most important thing when trying to rank for a keyword. Thanks OP
You're welcome

Thanks, will check it.

I would check the keyword density that already works for the niche (average of top5/10) and follow it.

You can't know, depends on the agency I guess

I always believed more in on page SEO. Thanks for the quality share!

That really doesn't seem strange on it's own. Already when you mention map, I am thinking it is a local result? In that case it is much easier to rank and keyword stuffing is going to penalize it less I would guess.

All the time. That thread is a few years old, so basically ancient for SEO. Even then, guided like these should be used more as suggestions, rather than gospel.

+1.
You never should use a generic keyword density or anchor text distrubtion or whatever.
You should check the first page of Google and see what they are looking for because every niche is different.
I had niches who ranked with more than 50% keyword anchors, while others needed less than 10%.
There is not 1 rule that works for every niche.

Yeah, it's a local result. I searched in incognito so I didn't get MY google results, but google was still pulling my nearby location. The term is highly competitive, PPC campaigns for relevant KW range from 100-100k searches and the bids range from $12-$80 per click for top ad according to adwords. I will say that they have the keyphrase as their URL and maybe they just built tons of backlinks? I have no idea.

yeah right , people are always look first off page when seo is considered but i think on page is more important than off page i have few website ranking without backlinks ...

You need both, think about SEO as a cars race.
Onpage SEO is your car and Offpage SEO is the fuel.
If your car build is wrong, even the most quality fuel won't help you, or you won't get the full potential of the fuel.
