Quick n' Dirty Guide to Charon - Free, Good Proxy Checker

Side note for noobs like me...

If you import text list, and check them, make sure you make 'Allow List' in PeerGuardian2 or disable it. I had zero good proxies on my first test. Looked at PG2 and it blocked every single one.

This is flavour country. Your own IP address should be at the top, and you'll want to select "External Judge". This lets you use a judge script outside your own box, which prevents all manner of problems and ensures a more accurate test. For threads and time-out you'll want somewhere between 15-30 generally, until you get more comfortable with what we're doing here and your own system's preferable setup. Threads is the amount of connections the checker can open at once while running through the list, and timeout is the amount of time it waits until it decides an IP is no good and the response is never coming. Retry is of course how many chances it gives an IP before it gives up and declares it Dead.

Does this mean we should use internal judge or not? The two recomendations conflict.

This is an updated Planetlab filter, just copy the text and overwrite it with what's in your file.

This is a list of UniqueInternetServices (makers of Proxyfirewall) IPs which may show up on your lists but will not be usable by you. To add this you must create a new filter file. Just open notepad, copy all the IPs in the above post, and paste them into the notepad file. Save it as "UniqueInternetServices.ini" and place it into the filterfiles folder in your charon folder and you're good to go. Don't forget to restart Charon and select it.

Does anyone know why I don't see any proxy being populated at all when I use the search engine scanning for proxy??

Weird last night it worked fine but now ,,it is fully emptied...my judges is working though,,please help thanks.
 
just going to try testing a MASSIVE list of ips thanks to this thread. I am preety sure all fo them will be dead lol.

how do I import this judges to charon .. ?
i went to Judge Options > PHP Judges and added the judges to php checkers .. but when I go back from there to Judge Options window I see the same list I have from default .. without any update ..

I really need help setting up judges as the one I'm using show me bad info .. like for example in charon a proxy is shown to be from china, but when the same proxy is checked with gmail signup it turns out it's from italy ..

I've used Stan for internal and cleared all the bad external judges (leaving me with very few external) and same problem i get with both internal and external .. I'd really apreciate some help with this

I've always wondered why if it's preferred to use the internal judge why do some people use external judges?

I have a couple questions about Charon that I can't find answer to here, if I may ask:

1) Where do I find the most updated list. The one shown is from sometime in 2008.

2) How or where do I add an updated list of external judges into Charon(if I wanted to use external judges).
- Do I paste over the updated list in the notepad file called "judges - configuration settings"? It has this warning inside so I don't want to mess with it:

### You mess with this and it's your own bloody fault ###

- Or do I add them into the "Proxy Judge Options" menu inside the programme?
- - And would I copy the updated list and then select "paste judges from clipboard" option by right clicking mouse (to enter them all at one time)?

3) How do I know which ones are the "finding the lowest azenv 1.04"? I don't understand this part but if explained I'll learn very quickly.

4) Where do we copy and overwrite the "ProxyLab filter" list. Where do I find the file? Should I just delete and paste over the list of PlanetLab IPs in the PlantetLab folder inside "filterfiles" folder (this makes the most sense)?

I know Charon is a great tool. These may seem like simple questions but I'd really like to be able to use it effectively to test proxies.

I have no interest in using the leeching part of it as it takes hours upon hours to get too few proxies (I'd be lucky to get 25 proxies after 6 or more hours leeching).

The proxy list goes into the main, gigantic window. You paste the list of judges I linked into the judge window.

Unless of course you selected Internal Judge in the connection settings, which is generally preferable. Then you don't need to bother with the Judge section at all.

Lowest ping. Ping is the time it takes for info to get from one machine to the other. So naturally, you want it to take as little time as possible.

I'm really sorry though, I'm still a little unclear on a couple things.

I can't figure out if you guys are saying external or internal proxy judges are better, or if you each have different preferences. What is your preference, external judges? I only plan to do checking of proxies, not grabbing or leeching (too much time).

No, I didn't miss it. I'm really sorry but it's only confused me more. It first appears you recommend using external judges. But are you then pointing out that Rhino suggests using internal judges?

I really apologize for being so confused about this. I just want to make sure I get it right.

Here's what I see Rhino suggests (is this what you refer to adding in your post?). But is this only for leeching and checking or just for checking lists of proxies?

If using external judges:
There appears to be different types of judges; Textenv, ProxyJudge V2.35. Does it matter which ones you use?

Some end in php, some end in cgi. Does that mean they only check either php or cgi proxies?

Is it better to use multiple judges, all that test good (and move them to the top box), or is it better to have fewer external judges being used?

Rhino says he prefers Internal, so I agree with him. I left in directions for using external in case people wanted to do that instead.

There's nothing whatsoever in my post about leeching proxies.

Hey This is all well and good but does it really work and what exactly are we trying to accomplish here be using this? I think I understand but would like someone here to clarify.
