Has anyone got a method for assessing if a site has a spam penalty before buying?

Using best guess on moz, ahref and majestic backlink profile.. as well as archive.org.. it's ok, just time consuming and relying on best guess...

Does anyone have a better method?

Yeah, use someone that does all that for you like accelerator_dd.

I use this for existing websites: https://fruition.net/google-penalty-checker-tool/

It should probably work with expired domains too. However I DO still check the backlink profile etc.
