I know they were down and people were worried at one time. Have those problems been fixed & is hostgator the best to use still, or, should I be looking for another host?
question, is hostgator still good to use for hosting?

Honestly, i'd say stay away from Hostgator or any other EIG service because they oversell like crazy.
I assume you're only looking for shared hosting.
We have hosting in over 25 different companies currently, and I'd recommend a few.
Just google webhostingtalk and scroll down to their "Web hosting offers" forum.
All those services are held to a certain standard by the forum and will be trashed if they do not deliver. In a worst-case scenario, you can also complain about their service on the forum and it's likely that they will be forced to respond.
If you don't feel like going through all that, here are a few that I really like (litespeed + ssd drives = really fast servers)
These are all monthly subscriptions (we don't like to be tied yearly)

I just migrated a few sites from Hostgator to another host today actually. I don't know what is going on with my account specifically - my friend has a reseller hosting account that has been up for a few years and is running fine but mine has been slow since the day I bought it earlier this year.
Some days, my sites would all have a database error, other times the load times would just be 60+ seconds. I got tired of hopping on tech support, waiting 20 minutes, then once I get on with them of course my site is loading fine again so they say I have to catch them when the site is having issues. Instead of play their game I just purchased hosting from a local company with very good reviews and I am happy so far - my 60+ second load times are now under 2 seconds max.
tl;dr HG used to be great, but as of recent my experiences with them have been nothing short of terrible.

they will ban your account if they even suspect you of doing something bad. they shut my account down and accused me of running a spam service.

Started having problems with Hostgator around Spring this year. Seems like it has been one problem after the other.
Today they migrated my reseller account to another server, and now all my sites are loading soooooo slow and sometimes showing a database connection error.
All my sites are WP and use WP-Clone to migrate them from our test server to our reseller account, so it would be very easy to migrate them to another reseller account. The only reason I even got a reseller account is because they disabled my shared hosting twice this year because of issues one of which was caused by them migrating that account to another server which ended up having issues that they tried to blame on my websites but after a couple of weeks with having to get my sites unbanned twice, they finally figured out is was an error on their setup.
I was happy with the reseller account because I could isolate each website from each other so if there was an issue with one site, it wouldn't affect them all. I got an email 2 weeks ago informing me of the upcoming change and the new IP addresses. So I set my Private Nameservers to the new IP addresses, and I thought there wouldn't be an issue (apparently my short term memory loss was the issue), and this morning I woke up to my websites being down. I called Hostgator, and after a few mins. the support Tech informed me the new email sent out after the change had the IP addresses switched from what the originally sent in the other emails. So I was like OK, mistakes happen. But now I realize after the websites have slowed down to a crawl and we have not done anything with the sites to cause every site to have slowed down.
I am done with them, been on hold now for at least 20 mins. while I have been typing up this rant. Site down = lost $$$$. Maybe one of my clients missed a $200k lead? (we just got one of those last week).
I need a new hosting provider. I like the reseller account to keep my sites seperated to help avoid single point of failures, hacks, etc...any recommendations for reseller hosting providers? I like being able to have phone support (even if I am on hold for awhile). I like have fantastico and Cpanels. The websites are legit US business websites for the most part.

I use A2Hosting and have had nothing but good experiences with them since migrating my Reseller account to them from HG.
They are actually going to be running a 52% off promotion from November 27 to December 2nd with code BF52OFF - I would hold off until then and buy at that point because the savings will be huge. When I bought my account they were only running a 30% discount and I was still happy with even that.

Wow, thanks for the heads up. I had just spoke to them and was about to sign up. I suppose 2 more days with Hostgator won't kill me. Pretty sad with the Hostgator tech support guy says I would be better off using another company. He says all the issues are being caused from the top down, aka management.
Hopefully I can migrate everyone at the end of the holiday weekend. My plumber says their busiest day is the day after Thanksgiving. What goes in must come out. Plunger day, you learn something new everyday, LOL.

No problem - I spoke with them prior to signing up as well and was blown away at their live support response time. I have spoken with them a few times during normal business hours and once in the middle of the night when I made a mistake during a site migration and they responded just as quickly.
Interesting fact about your plumber client, I'll definitely remember that!

Problem after problem.
First I signed up using PayPal but they didn't get the payment, yes it went through. So their registration process didn't complete and I was redirected to purchase a VPS on top of my hosting purchase. I contacted live support, after waiting the 30min wait time, and they sorted it out. I could login to my account.
Second, after logging in and waiting an hour or two, I still couldn't access my domain. I figured I'd give it a night to "propagate" but the next day still nothing. I ran a whois on the domain and realized they didn't even register it yet. Waited another 30 min for live support and in another 20 mins they had my domain registered. Another 30 mins and I could access the site. After accessing the site I noticed they didn't activate privacy that I paid for, so I had to do that with surprisingly no extra hassle.
Third, I'm finally up and running. Install wordpress and my plug-ins, then realize my site is loading slow. Spend the next couple hours trying to figure out why and trying to optimize best I could with no success. To see if it was my WP or plug-ins, i re-installed a fresh WP but that didn't help at all, load times still averaged 10 - 20 seconds.
Fourth, I tried live chat about 3 more time. Each time waiting half an hour but when time was up, no live chat popped up like it did before. Another hour or so wasted. I turned to their support pages on their own domain and load times are slow, occasionally even timing out all together. Searching around more led me here and several other places where this type of slow half ass service has become hostgators norm.
I thought they were good from pervious reviews but damn was I wrong. I understand a hiccup or two but every step is another obstacle and from reading others slow load time problems, it seems nothing will change soon. I think they give 45 day money back guarantee so if my site speed is not fixed by tonight I am canceling and going else where. It's only been 3 days but I've seen enough. Hope this helps someone else make a better decision.
