Is it possible to do keyword research without using paid service. I don't get much help from the google keyword tools. I tried using several chrome extension they are helpful to some extent. How do you guys do keyword research.

Yes it is, but not as accurately.

1) Keywords Everywhere browser extension to find long tails between 50 - 250 m/s.

2) Use allintitle:keyword to check how many sites are using the target title. The lower the amount the better, and easier to rank.

3) Check referring domains to page and domain of competition with SEOBook browser extension for Comodo IceDragon browser. This gives you an overview of links and more, from Ahrefs and MejesticSEO.

This is a time consuming approach, but you can find super low comp KW's with a small amount of search volume.

KW finder seems to help at this. btw I'd like to know if content focused on low comp keywords from KW finder (with good searches pm) would fetch traffic for a subdomain (like blogspot) or not.

Analyze your competitors for finding their targeted keywords. Then finding the search volumes for those kws.

Also lookup for long tail keywords. You can analyze the competitors meta title, description, meta kws, header tags. What kws they placed in those places.

Try wordtracker keyword tool, I've used it earlier. Used to provide good results to me.

Ubersuggest and KW finder for volumes and difficulty.

There are many free tools available.. like keywordtools.io and LSIgraph..also try google trends..

Install keywords everywhere on your chrome browser, and afterwards, visit keywordshitter.com . That' should help with keyword research if you're on a budget, but I would really recommend using SEMRUSH for this kind of work. A lot of free tools available; Kwfinder [5 free checks], keyword everywhere extension, LSI graph, google keyword planner, Ahrefs [paid]. I'm using these tools mostly for keyword research, works quite good.
