Alright, so I started my own blog and managed to get ranked 3rd for a competitive keyword but I'm not seeing much traffic or conversions still..Is there anything I might be doing wrong?

Well, #3 is not #1 so there's a chance people just stick to the first two results. According to searchenginewatch, even #1 position gets just 33% of search traffic and #3 gets just 11%. Check average CTRs for organic search at http://searchenginewatch.com/article/2276184/No.-1-Position-in-Google-Gets-33-of-Search-Traffic-Study. Another reason - your titles and descriptions might not look appealing to users, especially after the SERP redesign. Check out this article for details: http://moz.com/blog/new-title-tag-guidelines-preview-tool. And as for conversions, users might not convert because they don't find what they were looking for on your website. There can be many other reasons though, it depends on a website.

you should also double check that the search results isn't personalized. If you did not use a proxy or something else to check but just use google search to check, there is a chance that the site is ranked there just because google knows you have been frequently visiting your site. so it may show up as #3 for you but actually its much lower than that.

Exactly, now that you have 3rd, try different color schemes and layout possibilities.
