Question about citations!

Is it safe to build lots of links to a citation listing such as Yelp or Yellow Pages, and will it help rank the listing and pass through juice?

My thinking is to use citation sites like local directory listings as part of tier one or tier two...

If you're trying to rank locally, than definitely submit (or pay for) a directory submission with a lot of authority directories like those. Also, look into local directories specific to your city, state, etc. If you're talking about adding a money site to those citation listing places, then no. Don't do that.

It's definitely good to place lots of directory submissions and citation submissions to tons of places if trying to rank (a local business or something for a client). I have a decent list of submission sites I can send if you wanna PM me

I appreciate that, I have the lists of sites, more specifically what I mean is if the local listings link to inner pages of the money site, can we send backlinks to the citation sites or would that not provide any benefit?

Links such as social bookmarks for example, not spam.

I think it's always best practice to make OBL to highly-authoritative, niche-relevant websites (disregarding Wikipedia).. Find a very commonly used forum for OBL, or .edu/.gov sites..

Adding OBL to random sites like Yelp/YellowPages is kind of random
 
Trying to find ways to boost the citation listings, like a Yelp listing for example will rank in SERPs when optimized but I am looking for additional ways to boost these listings without paying for their services. Thought maybe building links to them could be one way.

Yes, but to build links to the listings, that's my question. I want to boost the listings in SERPs give them more power, and not pay the premium service to get the results. So I want to build links to the listings like Yelp for example but not until I know it has benefit to help rank listing.
The listings link to inner pages of money site, so the listings are technically tier 2 right now.
 
Anyone else have feedback? What backlinks would you build to your local citation listings like Yelp?
 
Each industry has certain citations that help rankings same as areas. I typically will run audits or scans using things such as BrightLocal, PlacesScout or you can do so manually by searching the area and industry you are trying to rank it's not a set of citations that rank everyone such as lawyers one of the biggest citations for them is avvo and home repair etc can be angieslist but then you have geo-specific citations that also help.
