I have recently been to able consulting with a company, but owner thinks he knows much more then the world. So he says put title tag like this on all pages of ecom site selling parts :

    >>>>> NAME-OF-SITE.COM/NAME OF COMPANY

(HE uses the >>>> in title because he says you notice quicker with >>>> )

He says this better then putting parts name. But then he hired me to help because nobody comes to sites.

    He is wrong correct ?

You should do title like :

    NAME PRODUCT | NAME COMPANY

    ?

You really shouldn't work for others, if you are not sure about the answer yourself.

Do keyword research, put the best ones in all of the tags, including title. Let him know that he can brand his site with logos and meta description, but the title and other tags are too valuable for SEO to waste on branding, especially if he has a long company name.

    My opinion is bit different.
The first question to be asked is:

What are his current rankings with >>>>> thing in his title?

If the pages have good rankings then having some special characters would certainly increase the site visitors. Such characters attracts the attention when appearing on search results page. Hence Good Click Through.

If you don't believe me check out Title tags of Eli's blog. http://www.bluehatseo.com/

However, if his rankings are not good for targeted keywords, he should change the title tags and should utilize them for maximum boost in SERPs.

Yeah, back in 2002 and for a blog maybe. For a company it just looks spammy.

If he really wants to help his click through rate, you should enable microformats. Those special characters are only hurting his wallet.

The ">>>>>>>" isn't going to improve rankings. If anything it may create a stop in the title. for example, words like "and" are stop words.

My advice, don't use it. if the guy won't play ball and you aren't sure, then kick him to the curb and study up on seo. Just my two pennies worth.
