Read:

Influence, Science and Practice, by Robert Cialdini.

It explains the scientific basis for so many aspects of human behavior, that you'll be able to understand a lot of things from it's roots, unlike the cookie-cutter techniques and formula approaches.

Trust me, this is a great book. I dare you to read it and not change your attitude and insight on a lot of things. Ideas will start pouring, and you'll apply what you learn into many things, not just selling.

Here are some tips I usually talk about in my copywriting seminars.

When ascribing to your sales copy a certain copywriting technique, be aware of the meta-historical context within your niche. That means if your niche tends to put out melodramatic sales letters, maybe being more subtle in terms of projecting potential claims/results would engender a higher conversion rate.

Take a look at the IM niche, many lemmings continue to ride the bonus bandwagon. Notwithstanding the efficacy of this technique in the past; in the present 'bonuses' imply a product of lower-value - suggesting implicitly that additional 'goodies' are needed to sweeten the deal on the table.
