Is there a better way to assess the quality of a proxy than this?

  1. Check to see what sites are hosted on the ip addresses
  2. Find the sites that have been deindexed
Then make a decision based on the % of sites deindexed to use or not to use the ip address.

Hey, are you sure, you're talking about the proxies?

What am I missing? I get the ip addresses from the proxy right? I don't want my site to get penalized for using an ip address where sites are consistently being deindexed. Let me know if I am being paranoid.

I don't think you should focus on this.

The IP address of the website doesn't matter much, especially if you use a shared hosting account (because you have to suspect that some websites that used this IP have been spammy - and as this is the case with most shared hosting, you are better off ignoring it).

Moreover, once your site is up, you can always use CloudFlare. And your website will show only CF IP addresses (in which case, you will share the IP displayed on the Internet with other thousands of websites).

So, in the end, it doesn't really matter. ;)
