My background, I have been programming professionally since 1997, I have over a decade of enterprise level programming experience, even in the affiliate marketing world. I would say there probably isn't a program I couldn't write including things like 3d game engines and image reading weak captcha bypassing. I want to get into the online marketing world for myself but I have no idea where I should start looking. I have been lurking on here for years and years and I figured I would finally post and see what you guys think.
So what do you think? what should I start researching and getting into to make money?
I am a programmer too. And I can guarantee you that there is a lot more money to be made from being good at getting certain terms to the top of the search engines than there is in programming for a salary.
There is nothing as sweet as making money appear out of thin air on the internet.
Don't waste your time on Fiverr or offering your services for free or even for money. It is all a dead end. You need to figure out the basics of getting keywords to rank in the search engines, and then figure out your own unique approach to automate the work.
The best way to get started is pick any topic with keywords worth at least $1 per click that interests you. Buy a domain, start a blog about it, write some great content and get at least one little lousy keyword to the first 5 pages of google. It doesn't need to be the golden keyword that gets a million searches like "widgets" it can be a phrase like "little blue widgets to stick up your nose". Just make sure that phrase gets 1,000 searches a month.
When you see your page in the first 5 pages of google search results. Redo the page add more content, comments, and put something on their to try and make money. In my experience affiliate programs are a much bigger revenue generator than adsense but either is fine.
OK so now you are in the game, but basically still nowhere. Time to build some backlinks to that page. You don't need 10,000 that will hurt you more than help you. Manually go out and build 20 - 50 relevant good backlinks from different types of sources. Keep building until you are on the first page. This really shouldn't be that hard unless you are trying for poker or drugs.
Being on the first page of google with a good keyword phrase that is worth at least $1 per click and gets 1000 searches should yield you a few dollars per month. The first time it will be tons of work for a few dollars. But if you can accomplish that...... You can make money appear out of thin air.
Use your programming skills to automate the process as much as possible, repeat 10,000 times and it will be raining money
