chatGPT can help with solving problems, but you need to refine the solutions all the time.
by default it often provides clumsy shit, not usable for commercial software. if you just use it for hobby programs maybe, but for anything serious its useless rightnow.

Seriously, I had an issue with a react code and asked chatgpt 4 to fix it for me, it didn't know how to fix it and it went ahead and changed my code and then used a react hook inside a loop and a callback, which it definitely knows it won't work.

I'm genuinely curious how hard you tried. I've seen seasoned coders say it sucks, and I've seen seasoned coder say it speeds up their workflow.
It definitely won't take any programmers full time jobs.... But I will say since GPT came out I haven't had to hire a programmer once. These are scripts I'd usually pay $200 - $2k for. And I can get them shipped faster, exactly how I want them.
I know less than basic when it comes to programming. I'm sure there are many others out there that are paying the $20 for GPT4 to get it done themselves instead of hiring freelancers.

if you use them form simple scripts for personal use maybe it will make the job done but if you want to build complex logic with third party libraries in a scaling business app it fails

I know seasoned programmers who embrace AI and use it to save time. They took the time to learn, experiment, and use it to it's full potential. Unlike egotistical programmers who try to prompt GPT to code a complex script in one shot then blow if off 5 minutes later because it's full of errors.
Why spend time thinking, researching, and writing out a block of code when it can get done in minutes, sometimes seconds if you know exactly what you want? If you're an advanced programmer you can get more specific in you prompts and get it to output complex code.

If I needed a python script I had to hire someone. There is just no other option. But now with chatGPT and claudeAI, I have generated 100+ py scripts.
What used to take a full day for me to do manually, now only takes 8 seconds to finish on Google colab.
I create mostly simple scripts but they are customized scripts exactly as I needed. Not even a friend will do this much for me.
I don't know what should be the prices but on average if I had to pay for example, $50 each, it could easily be $5000+.
I know people generating a lot more with it. Imagine just 1000 people doing this like me : $5000 x 1000 = $5,000,000 worth of work.
$5,000,000 vs $0. There is no comparison.
Replacing programmers is another story which is not going to happen soon. But there is definitely some value AI tools are providing right now which is already huge by itself.

ChatGTP has over 100 million users, I think 1,000 people is way too generous. And I promise those devs would've charged you over $50. I remember a few years ago I paid $200 for someone on BHW to code me a simple scraper. Something that should've taken 48 hours max took almost a week, maybe more. Had to threaten a dispute just to get an incomplete script that broke a month later. Never again.
I mean technically it already did replace programmers, even if it's just freelancers. Now imagine someone like yourself learning how to "code" with GPT. You can start making simple scripts for other people, charge less, and deliver faster than devs that refuse to learn it. This will 100% happen soon. I'm sure it already has.
