Preppers were right all along

I come from an eastern country were in the old days people were used to hodling produce and food in jars, preserves.
It's not that we were depleting the planet or anything...we just had a big reserve of food that we respected and ate.
If anything throwing away food and being wasteful is the bad thing. So everyone would have like 50 jars of various salads, beans, spreads, meat, fish, canned fruit with sugar.

Nowadays we got lazy from the easy life - high paying IT job, takeaway, market's around the corner, theres everything. They made it somehow more expensive if you try jarring your own food.

But then something happened...that I NEVER expected to happen. I always thought what has to happen for the government to close town and turn us into a "Resident evil" situation. I thought a nuclear war or the literal end of the world.
Well covid hit last march and ...the government closed off all the town exits. Didnt matter how rich you were, or if you were driving a G wagon. Suddenly the police was chasing them, jailing them, suddenly our corrupt and lazy police turned into judge dredd.

Parks were closed, and town exits were closed. People were lining up on all supermarkets like crazy. You couldn't escape town if everyone was drilling and making noise. And it wasnt even that bad in my country. In greece and uk people couldnt even leave their home without an SMS or something.

another thing that caught my eye was buying a UPS for my computer, as electricity had started to cut at random and ive had it.
I also learned to use fallen branches for firewood and discovered wood stoves.

So the new strange feeling got me:
Can you imagine that the gov has the power to:
- cut your water
- cut your power
- cut your heat
- close the supermarkets
- prevent you from going outside

now imagine if you had rain water collected, if you had a UPS or a few batteries, if you had a wood stove and food preserves.
Suddenly no one can do anything to you.

Preppers were right all along, and the apocalypse they were talking about...kinda is happening. We got fucking prevented from going out.,

Always good to be prepared. Just don't let it overtake your life.

Yeah, but why exactly would they do that? You really think the gov would want everyone to just die? Then what would be the point of being in charge then? Then they aren't in charge of anyone anymore...

A few years ago, I watched a few episodes of this show called "Doomsday Preppers" where people spend a good portion of their time honing their survival skills and preparing for some catastrophic event they are afraid of (financial collapse, EMP, flood, etc). I found it interesting as I am somewhat interested in survivalism type stuff, but I ended up feeling sorry for them, like "Wow, these people waste their lives preparing for something that is never going to happen." At the end of each episode they would give the probability of the thing actually happening, like "Experts say there is a 0.12 percent chance of EMP happening." Well one of the episodes was a woman who was preparing for a possible pandemic. She had masks, hand sanitizer, bio suits, stocked up supplies, and on weekends she would make her family "practice" the protocol, I was like "Wow what a nutcase." At the end of the episode though, they said "Experts say there is a 45 percent chance of a pandemic requiring lockdowns in the future" and I was like "What? 45 percent? That can't be right" Then forgot about it. Who's laughing now? lol It pays to be prepared.
