hi all ,

my brother is actually doing PPC for his websites .

he spent about 3k usd on ppc , has approx 50k people come to the website but

no conversions or calls .

any reason why that this is happening ?

thanks in advance !

Well if that's true that's quite alarming. It depends on a lot of different factors. Is this a service or a product? If it's a product is the UX pretty shitty and people are bouncing off the website quickly? I would analyze all of the data and pause that campaign immediately to see what to change before you start it back up.

hi there Marvinmartian , thanks for the super quick reply . the problem is how should he analyse the data .

cos i saw that the bounce rate on his website is approx 50% ?

does it make sense that may be competitors clicking ? he is providing a service ....

Why would he spend 3k without knowing what he's doing..?
hes new and eager to get business i guess . i told him to chill and think it thru before doing anything .

but he went ahead ....

Dude we need more details to work with. MarvinMartian is right- take the data you have and try to make sense of where people are dropping off and how you can remedy it. Traffic is half the battle, and competitors don't have time to click 50K worth of clicks just to throw you off. If that's a legitimate concern for his industry, then you can exclude audiences in clickfarm countries... but I'd be very surprised if competition went that far simply to mess with your brothers numbers.

Find out where the visitors are dropping off. Is he using Google analytics? If so, check the traffic flow. Where are people leaving? If it is the front page, perhaps invest in a heat map plugin to identify where on the first page they seem to go towards, or not. 50% bounce rate isn't awful, is that his entire site or just his PPC? If high (70%+) bounce rate on PPC only, perhaps consider the competition hiring a clickfarm.

Also, it seems I spoke too soon. I've always been pretty vanilla when it comes to SEO... browsing this forum, maybe a clickfarm isn't a far bet. If you can, exclude countries with very inexpensive labour costs- China, India for example. Google is supposed to be doing a good job of filtering out fraudulent clicks.

The truth is analytics can be used in a variety of ways, every campaign is different so every campaigns data needs to be analyzed. I've been doing Adwords/SEO for a few years and I still learn tons of new stuff with every new campaign I do for a client.

Hello again,

Well remind him that his eagerness just costed him 3 grand out the door. If I had a client that I set up with a PPC campaign on google or bing and they went through 3 grand with no conversions or calls I would be dropped as their consultant that day.

Things he could have done:
  1. Screwed up targeting: could have somehow messed that up so badly he targeted all of your country instead of in specific areas, that's possible.
  2. Added his keywords incorrectly: Could have not made it known at the specific service he was selling.
  3. Horrible website: People could bounce at 50% or more on the first page if you have a combination of undefined advertisement and bad website designed which turns the user off completely.
Let me know if that makes sense but he really needs to pause that campaign since it hasn't done anything good. If anything he should read up on google adwords for a little bit or hire someone to work on it for him so he can diagnose the issues before he starts losing more money.

Competitors might click on a few ads, but no where near that many ads in a few days so that can't be the issue. Also I would advise to run standard ad delivery over accelerated for a new campaign so you don't run through all of your money in the beginning of the day and your ads are spread more throughout the day.

These are possible cases:

1. Your ads are showing on Unrelated Keywords (Check Search terms and adjust Negative Terms)
2. You have problems with Landing Page (Copy, Loading Time, SSL Issues, etc.)
3. You are Targeting non-relevant Audience
4. Invalid Clicks (Although Google take care of it)

I advise you to check Analytics and use a Plugin like Hotjar to see the User Behavior.

Dude how did he spend that much without learning the basics of the platform he is using first??! If it's a widely used platform there is absolutely going to be free courses teaching you how to use it. Tell him to invest two days of his time learning everything he can about the platform he is using, then go back and analyze the data.

My first campaign I invested 20+ hours the week before the job started into learning Google adwords and analytics. Free courses offered by Google, didn't cost me anything financially and it paid itself off in a month in time investment. I got my first client twice the average CTR for their industry and my other jobs came from their referrals.

Lol your talking like it was him who did this, it was his brother. Most people don't think for 20 hours before they run an ad anyways. He should have tested first, but at least it wasn't my money.

Question 1 - What is the market?
Question 2 - What PPC portal is he using - are we assuming AdSense as you don't say?
Question 3 - What keywords is he bidding on or is he using category or In market price model?
Question 4 - How well does his landing page relate to his keywords
Question 5 - How well is his landing page (or pages) set up for conversion
Question 6 - What is his tracking code telling him? What are people doing on his landing pages.

Other questions - Check seasonality / daily cost cycle. How good are your advert creatives or text? Have you considered multimedia ads or are just using text ads (Adwords for example has a built in Ad builder now that's as easy as pie to make professional looking banners of all Adsense sizes)

General Advice 1 STOP NOW
General Advice 2 Make sure you can answer every question above and understand what the answers mean - because if you can't your brother is pi$$ing his money up a wall
General Advice 3 KNOW YOUR ROI!!! What should a click cost to still make a profit. What should your conversion rate be at average click cost?

Above all..

Know your ROI
Understand your ROI
Measure everything you do against your ROI

And if it's negative...

STOP!!!

He may be better off on his own. I've only been in IT for a couple years, not long before I started PPC but I've had the luxury of an excellent mentor. Sounds like he needs to think about how badly he wants to be doing this. If he wants it, there are plenty of resources available to learn it and plenty of money to be made with the skills he will learn.

I didn't realize he had hired someone to do this! That makes it a lot more of the other guys fault.. is the $3000 he spent all in platform costs, or is part of it paying for the service the PPC guy is offering? If so, FIRED!! There are so many PPC experts who would gladly take his money and make him way more in return!!

yeah. even for my own tastes, that's to much. I usually stay around 3digits not knowing what I am doing and quit.

but honestly, even 50 K visitors d ont buy ANYTHING? then your service/page sucks.

Even if you sell "dog training" and make ads for "Breast Enhancement", 0,01% WILL buy some Dog training..

I used third person terms, if I was talking to him it would be in second person terms.

Haven't read the thread but you probably need to hire somebody to run your campaigns. It will be better than burning through your budget, at least until he learns the basics.

PPC is a harsh mistress... starting it without knowing what you're doing is a SURE way to stick your pickle in the meat grinder. It sounds to me like OP's brother needs better analytics to see how these users are behaving. How many pages are they visiting on average? Where are they going before they leave? And is this behavior any different than an organic visitor's typical pattern? Then you can see which keywords are a lethal bounce rate and cut those out right away, save budget there to start. This is the kind of thing I can't explain all in one post, but suffice to say based on the lack of conversions there are likely multiple issues with both the Adwords campaign and the site's landing pages.

it depends on the niche to be honest.. If he's hustling water damage leads than that could be a daily spend.

are the search ads? Dispay? are the keywords set to phrase or broad?
