I've taken an interest in IM, and even taken some stabs at it in the past, but I'm having this giant doubt/skepticism or something... I wonder if I have the wrong frame of mind, lack of clarity, whatever it is, that may hamper me.
I'm the kind of person who hates ads and goes out of my way to avoid them. I rooted my android phone just so I could use an ad blocker.
It seems to me, the rational way to go about buying something online is to first read the product reviews, check out relevant forums, etc. to find the best product/brand/model, and then go right to the official product website to see if they're selling it directly, as well as check out the major shopping/pricing aggregation sites to find the best price from a legit distributor. I never have to click on an ad to get what I want. I'm in control, and consequently, I get a reliable product at a great price from a trusted source.
Now this PPV/PPC stuff seems to thrive on a buying pattern that I just don't understand. People actually click on these annoying ads, go through sketchy url redirects, give their personal information to unknown companies, and potentially even whip out their credit cards. I don't grudge the IMers their success at taking advantage of this arse-backwards human behavior, and I'm trying to open my mind so I can earn my own piece of the pie.
Is it really arse-backwards? Are these clickers and customers really that stupid? Does this whole thing function by ignoring the right side of the bell curve? But then it was New York financial guys spending money on penis pills... Errgh, makes me want to do a Frank Grimes freakout!
Is my method of shopping irrational? Inefficient compared to just going where an adsense ad tells you? Yes it takes time to read/research about my next online purchase, but I also save myself a lot of disappointment, time and money wasted returning lemons, money I can use for other things, etc.
Do you guys just go "it is what it is" and focus on the numbers like CTR and EPC, or do you first need to clear your mind of some misconceptions so you can go next level with unique and profitable ideas?
