I plan on posting events to a blog of mine that are local to my city. Since there really isn't a way to make this content unique, I'm going to simply copy and paste it.

I was doing a little research and found that if I use the tag, "<link href="http://www.example.com/canonical-version-of-page/" rel="canonical" />" with the example link leading back to the original page where I found the event, I should be good and won't get penalized with duplicate content, correct?

Is there any better way to go about marking these blog posts as, "not to be indexed."

The rel canonical can be used if the content is from the same site. It's used to say to google that the original content is in the red part <link href="http://www.example.com/canonical-version-of-page/" rel="canonical" />
Fot this you're going to create duplicate content. Simply say in robots.txt to do not index that page where is duplicate content.

Add this line to your robots.txt
    Code:
    Disallow: /link-of-the-content-to-deindex.html

If there are no way to rewrite the text, I suggest posting the original URL at the end of the post

    Post text.........

    Source : Example. com

Unfortunately it is not a solution, the only fast and easy way is to modify robots.txt file.

In my country major "news" sites are having 90% of their content copied from other site with just a "source" kind of a link (sometimes no link at all) at the end of the article. i am talking about sites with millions of views per month. The rest 10% is content translated from sites like ViralNova or HUffPo or whatever

If you don't care how long you website wil last in rankings you can always put some spinned conntent in a div moved 500px left or right. Google's algo won't detect it, but human moderation - yes. Sooner or later.

I know, in my country too, this do not means that is a safe Seo tactic (it isn't)
They are indexing duplicate contents giving backlinks to other sites.

I know exactly what you mean, so much of the content is copied from other sources, but they do get a lot of their traffic from other sources apart from Google, such as their app/direct traffic etc so they can get away with it. If you are relying on Google for traffic, duplicate content might sting you later.

Add more text, for example, giving more details about the event to make it a bit unique. It's better to have 70% duplicate content than to have 100% duplicate content.

Okay, so since all of this duplicate content is going on the blog page, just add that code to the entire robot.txt file of the blog page?

How is there no way to make the content unique? Never have I come across an article that cannot be stolen and spun... never. You'll never find a solution to a problem if you admit defeat before you even try.

    Exactly!
There is not article that can't be rewritten to be unique. Even is is about a specific things like reports of whatever, you can always write them in your own words.

It's not the fact I can't rewrite them, but these articles are for local events in my city. These 'articles' are often less than roughly 200 words a piece, and it's simply not worth my time to rewrite all of them, or have some else do it. Plus, the articles consist of the bare bones of the events, such as the location, prices for 'x' food, etc.

I suppose in the future, it may not hurt to look into posting more in depth articles that are more SEO-oriented so to speak.

I still don't see how you can't re-write that and add some of your own content. Maybe history about the event, 'must see' things ect...

You can use robots.txt file or add robots noindex meta tag in your site's pages

Yes do it, the canonical tag can't be used in this case because the original content is not from your site.
It's a tag that is used with inner pages of your website.

I suggest you not to use 100% duplicate content. You can change it slightly. To change your articles you may use spinning tools. With duplicate content there is always a possibility to get penalized by Google.
