Link pyramid is much safer, because for google it is harder to see. But it doesn't have the power of a link wheel which links strong and relevance to each other. But at the moment I would prefer link pyramid. Maybe you can mix these two types a little..

Make your link building as random as possible, with a linkwheel it is easy to track because the Google bot will follow the links right back to where it started and will easily be able to see a pattern,
Even if linkwheels provide some benefit now they will most likely cause problems further down the line with future updates, so I would stick to link pyramids every time.

My two cents ...I think I agree with most of above suggestions. I guess a combination of both and carefully selecting your links/spoke etc ..is crucial. Automated tools for this may become almost useless in the light of new algos by these big boys
