How is it possible?

Example

My competor has a domain with the name of "the-abc.com"

His main keyword is "abc"

He created a page with URL as "the-abc.com/abc" and linked that from the homepage as anchor text of "abc"

so, when someone searches for "abc" on google his homepage appears instead of his page "the-abc.com/abc"
but his page "the-abc.com/abc" also appears but in the site link section

Can someone please explain how is this possible? What kind of SEO technique is this?

Generally the home page is the most powerful page in a site. Some people tend to throw internal links from all the subpages with certain keywords in order to increment the likeability of removing any kind of canibalization among multiple subgpages and the homepage.

Your example is perfect. As far as the secondary page /abc is linking with a exact match anchor its signalling google that the homepage holds the power for the given keyword. You can be ranking for long tail keywords in the subpage /abc but the "Abc" keyword will be prime in the homepage as you see.

You can repeat this in many subpages to improve this likelyness.

interlinking pages to index page.
straight forward linking for SEO.

the main keyword still needs to be promoted for any SEO value.

all he has done is set the anchor to go to main page.

anchor text as a kw can help in SEO

in the old days you learn HTML 4.0 via a book and teacher and computer know days it all visual wp plugins ...

learn HTML and it so easy to understand any linking ....

Thanks for the great answer, but I just want to get more clear about this topic.

Is it safe to use this same technique to rank 4 different keywords?
like creating 4 different pages with the same technique and then linking all 4 individual pages from the homepage with different anchor texts for which I want to rank homepage?

Is this work? do you have any example websites that are using this same technique for multiple keywords?

It will be really very helpful if you answer this.

Thanks in advance.

Maybe I'm wrong, but it sounds like EMD to me, but over optimization for the keyword. Could possibly lead to a penalty down the road.

The homepage is always powerful one, and it will have more backlinks compared to inner pages.
